It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined, every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute, and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.… (més)

Even though I know how the story ends, how Snow ends up in power, I still read through the book hoping that he'd run off and find happiness with Lucy Gray. It was heartbreaking, and a great prequel. I hope we get another book that shows him rising to the presidency, and his efforts to maintain power. ( )

I loved this book, couldn't put it down once I got it! It almost makes you like Snow for a minute which is crazy to think about! I loved how she was able to set up the rivalry that Snow will have with Katniss. I really like the stories about the bad guys and how they started out. If you loved The Hunger Games definitely read this book! ( )

My grandson recommended this book to me and I will always read anything he wants me to read so we can talk about it! I loved The Hunger Games Trilogy and although I didn't love this book, I certainly enjoyed listening to it. It gives you an understanding into the behavior of the young Snow who grows up to become President Snow. It makes me want to reread The Hunger Game trilogy again! ( )

A spiralling, slugish nightmare of void.

How disappointing. What's more disappointing is that I stuck with it till its depressingly orthodox end. ( )

This book is a must read for Hunger Games fans. It was a great origin story and honestly made Snow an even more interesting character as you saw into his mind, his motivations and his past. It wasn't quite as intense as the original trilogy but it was fascinating to see the development of the Hunger Games and how different they were from Katniss's era. The focus was more on the horror of the creation of the games and those who were evil enough to make it rather than the action occurring within the arena. It added a HUGE insight to it all.
There was definitely an underlying commentary on the present day world and how governments will alienate 'outsiders' to sow a distrust and turn the people against each other in order to control them and keep them from blaming the true culprits- the government itself. It hit very close to home in a myriad of ways.
Other than that the setup of the other characters was perfect. Lucy Gray and Sejanus in particular stand out as great foils to contrast Snow against. They were both much more morally good and helped to fully portray his faults. I honestly adored those two. They were by far my favorite characters of the book and honestly just deserved better. Snow in contrast was very self centered, manipulative, self serving and clearly thought the world owed him something. He is the most realistic villain I've encountered which makes him all the more scary when you parallel him to those in power in our own world.

Overall: This book is a deeper dive into Panem and shows the Hunger Games in a never before seen way with characters both new and old. It's not the same intense rush as the original trilogy but speaks volumes in other ways. ( )
