"Crossings is an unforgettable and explosive genre-bending debut-a novel in three parts, designed to be read in two different directions, spanning a hundred and fifty years and seven lifetimes. On the brink of the Nazi occupation of Paris, a German-Jewish bookbinder stumbles across a manuscript called Crossings. It has three narratives, each as unlikely as the next. And the narratives can be read one of two ways: either straight through or according to an alternate chapter sequence. The first story in Crossings is a never-before-seen ghost story by the poet Charles Baudelaire, penned for an illiterate girl. Next is a noir romance about an exiled man, modeled on Walter Benjamin, whose recurring nightmares are cured when he falls in love with a storyteller who draws him into a dangerous intrigue of rare manuscripts, police corruption, and literary societies. Finally, there are the fantastical memoirs of a woman-turned-monarch whose singular life has spanned seven generations. With each new chapter, the stunning connections between these seemingly disparate people grow clearer and more extraordinary. Crossings is an unforgettable adventure full of love, longing and empathy"--… (més)

An interestingly constructed puzzle box of a novel, with two different ways it can be read (I read it through, then skimmed it the other way). The mechanism for "soul crossings" is a bit silly, but other than that, this is an intricate and enjoyable novel. ( )

Has all the ingredients I like: nested narrative with allusions/echoes of other threads, hunt for a manuscript, choose your own adventure option...but it kind of overdid each of these things to the point where I just found the novel a clever construction rather than an immersive experience. Will reread in the baroness sequence. ( )

I read the alternate way, as one novel. Interesting story and well written. ( )

Two versions to read. Can be read as three separate stories (novellas?) or one interwoven novel. I read the alternate version of twenty intertwined chapters. Interesting. ( )

fiction - souls that can hop from body to (mostly unsuspecting) body achieving a sort of immortality over many lifetimes.

I read this in the "Baroness" order of pages and was hooked in by curiosity, and later by the sweeping drama of the characters. Then I wanted to read it again in consecutive page order, but found that I couldn't "unsee." So you may want to read it that way first, but then again it may not be quite as interesting. ( )
