"Lisa Power is a tortured ghost of her former self. The author of a bestselling thriller called Thief River Falls, named after her rural Minnesota hometown, Lisa is secluded in her remote house as she struggles with the loss of her entire family: a series of tragedies she calls the 'Dark Star.' Then a nameless runaway boy shows up at her door with a terrifying story: he's just escaped death after witnessing a brutal murder--a crime the police want to cover up. Obsessed with the boy's safety, Lisa resolves to expose this crime, but powerful men in Thief River Falls are desperate to get the boy back, and now they want her too. Lisa and her young visitor have nowhere to go as the trap closes around them. Still under the strange, unforgiving threat of the Dark Star, Lisa must find a way to save them both, or they'll become the victims of another shocking tragedy she can't foresee"--Provided by publisher.… (més)

This was a mystery/adventure novel with a well developed plot and good main characters, though a bit more character development would have made it better. He relied heavily on the plot, understandably as it is very imaginative and well designed, but more on the characters would make it more enjoyable. Still it is a fast paced, page turner and though slightly predicatable, it is still a good read with a couple of dramatic twists at the end. He does a great job of keeping the pages turning with a well written narrative style that is easy to read. ( )

I love the Frost Easton books by this author, so I thought I'd give this one a try. It was an emotional twisty tale about a writer that lives her own story. Even though Lisa's life is a very sad one, she has managed to write a best seller using her hometown as the focal point for her book. Then strangely, one night she finds herself caught up in a mystery where a ten-year-old boy is being hunted by very bad people. Lisa decides to protect him and literally steps into her own novel. I did not see the end coming but the author did a good job making everything come together. I don't think this book was quite as good as the Frost Easton books, but it was pretty close. Good job, Brian Freeman. ( )

I felt the story was overly contrived. The main character, author Lisa Powers, was written to be more famous than Stephen King or even John Lennon. No matter how small town your town is, not 120% of every human will recognize you. 90% of the book you learn at the end follows the plot line of Powers' claim to fame book, which is terribly contrived and left me often yelling at my Kindle "oh come on!". Then the last chapter throws in a twist that albeit interesting (and you can see it coming a couple of chapters prior), makes you realize you wasted your time on the first 90% of a poorly written story. Freeman had a good plot, but IMHO he stretched the coincidences far too much, and tied so many characters conveniently together. I got this on Amazon Prime's free reads. I guess you get what you pay for. ( )

The title Thief River Falls came up on my Kindle Fire when I accidentally opened the bookstore. Since I grew up about fifty-five miles from Thief River Falls. Brian Freeman creates a true sense of place, of the vastness of the Red River Valley and the bitterly cold winter. I cannot swear to how faithful it is to Thief River in particular as we only went there to go to the small-animal vet and for Bible Camp at Lake Bronson where Lisa Power lived. But the cold and blowing wind and snow, he captures that perfectly. I stopped to read the description and then I had to read the book. It sounded like a fascinating suspense novel, though I am wary of books with children in jeopardy. This was clearly a kid in jeopardy book.

The main character is Lisa Power, a mystery writer who has become famous thanks to Reese Witherspoon making a movie of a recent book based in her home town and called “Thief River Falls,” so this is a book within a book novel – something I love. Eerily, the events of the novel seem to be coming to life, a young boy is on the run from local police who plan to kill him just as they were in the book. She is determined to save him at all costs, though the conspiracy grows to seem all-encompassing with more and more people involved..

Thief River Falls is a very suspenseful novel that leads to increasing jeopardy for Lisa and the boy she calls Perdue as in lost. As the conspiracy gets larger, involving more people in Thief River Falls, the way out narrows until it looks like all is lost. The end is a surprise making this a far different kind of suspense novel unlike any I have read before. Really, it is a stunner.

Thief River Falls will be released on February 1st, though I received a free copy via Amazon pre-release offers for Prime members.
