    The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet de Becky Chambers (andreas.wpv)
    andreas.wpv: These books are really different in story and in setting. The long way is a high science fiction story of star faring people. While the story is so different, the mood and feel of the story, and the telling of the story are similar - a tender loving observation of human beings living their lives together in non-ordinary circumstances.… (més)

I went into this blind. I watched BooksandLala on Youtube talking about this and thought it sounded interesting enough to avoid hearing everything else about it. I'm really glad I did that because reading the blurb after I realised that it gives you a bit of the conclusion of what the story is about and I think it's better to come to your own conclusion.

Musings I had while reading: Recently I read a thread on Reddit that asked the question why in the Fantasy-genre there weren't that many friendships portrayed between women.
I've thought a lot about that question and I think because friendships between women are 'quiet'. We all know stories about mothers who will go into battle for their children. Who will stand up for them even if they won't do it for themselves. We all know stories about men on the battle field fighting for their friend. Even if they can't fight for themselves.

But are there stories about women behind walls? In their homes? Are there stories about women who distract and/or seduce men because they know their friend can't take it (anymore?). About sister-wives who nurture the newest wife into their family because they know what is coming? Stories about women who create something as a gift for their friends because that's the only thing they can do to show them they are thinking about them? Stories about women who take in children of their friends because they can handle it at that moment?

Those aren't really flashy signs of friendships. It's mundane. It's boring and most of all: it's invisible for those who could write and read. For most of the history only a select few could write and read, and for most of history those were men. Why would they be interested in the lives of women when they weren't involved?

It's a shame we still don't have that many stories about women where their friendships is integral to the story but books like these... bring us that much closer.

And I loved this. I loved the way it was told, I loved the practical side to it. I loved the blending of history and myth. I loved the many sentences that were just beautiful. I loved that it showed love.

The only thing I was disappointed by: I thought the characters would be animals and I was way too let down by the fact it wasn't. I don't even know why I would think that? ( )

Summer 2021 (June);

I unexpectedly really loved this (and it made me super glad that I picked up [b:When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain|53265678|When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain (The Singing Hills Cycle, #2)|Nghi Vo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1588169628l/53265678._SY75_.jpg|81017617] off Tor's Free Book of the Week a few weeks ago). I liked the framing of the trans-monk who is traveling everywhere, cataloging things and Rabbit as the storyteller of these little chunks of a life that lead dangerous, amazing places.

This writing was so rich and winding, I found myself captivated, wishing that the percentage on my device would stop notching toward the end. I'm incredibly glad that there are five more pieces in this series coming in the future as I definitely want to devour #2 already. ( )

I seem to have a new found love for novellas and when I saw the cover for this one, I was completely blown away and purchased it immediately. And if there’s one thing I can say, it’s that the book is as gorgeous as it’s cover.

The writing style of this book took some getting used to but once I got the hang of it, I felt lost within the beautiful words. It’s very atmospheric and I loved how the author was able to evoke such wonderful images in my head through her words. The story is also told like snippets from history, each event corresponding to an object from the time; and I found this style to be very unique. This is also the story about a long dead empress told by one of her servants, and I loved the way it highlights the important roles played by forgotten women during a revolution.

True to it’s promotions, this is an exquisite Asian inspired fantasy tale about royalty, feminism, friendship and empire; written beautifully and with great representation and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves feminist fantasy. Don’t be disheartened if you are unsure initially - just push through a bit and I have a feeling you’ll fall in love with it as much as I did. ( )

I found the point of view used to tell this story left me with very little emotional response to it. Although the description seemed fascinating, the actual story left me feeling flat.

That said, I do look forward to more stories from Cleric Chih. ( )
