Erwin Panofsky, uno de los grandes humanistas de nuestro siglo, nació en Hannover en 1892. Profesor en Hamburgo, el nazismo le obligó a afincarse en los Estados Unidos, donde residió hasta su muerte en 1968, y donde desde 1935 enseñó historia del arte en el Institute for Advanced Study de Princeton. De la amplitud y profundidad de su aportación a la historia de la cultura occidental dan buena prueba los estudios que componen este volumen, EL SIGNIFICADO EN LAS ARTES VISUALES, y que él mismo reunió en forma de libro. De la teoría de las proporciones a la visión histórica de Vasari, de Ticiano a Poussin, Panofsky restaura los nexos que unen la obra de arte a su entorno, sustituyendo la historia del arte como compartimento estanco por una síntesis viva y fecunda en la que el arte ilumina las ideas y es iluminado por ellas. Especial atención merecen los ensayos dedicados al abad Suger de Saint Denis y a Alberto Durero, dos claves del arte europeo que han tenido en Panofsky a su más autorizado intérprete moderno; y, naturalmente, el ensayo sobre iconografía e iconología, valiosa introducción a una disciplina creada, nutrida y elevada por el propio autor a alturas magistrales.
