Anyway, I like reading books about the book world, and this is the story of a bookseller who gets caught up in a murder scheme. It's definitely twisty, though I could tell pretty early on that there was much more to the story, and the character Malcolm Kershaw, than meets the eye. There is a fair amount of misdirection that kept me guessing, and as the narrative approached the climax I definitely wanted to keep reading until the Big Reveal. Malcolm sort of comes off as a bit of a ne'er do well, a pretty mild-mannered guy who stumbles into a mess. Some revelations midway through disavow the reader of that notion, though the character does lack a certain intensity, moving through life almost in a dreamlike state, accepting all the things that happen with a vague curiosity, though he is well-versed in the tropes found in every crime and mystery novel, about taking precautions and covering his tracks. I can't really say much here about the actual plot without throwing spoilers, and I don't want to do that. I'm surprised, though, that Goodreads shows this as the first book in a series, because it really feels like a very complete story, to me. I guess I should expect one more twist! But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She's looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal's old list. And the FBI agent isn't the only one interested in this bookseller who spends almost every night at home reading. The killer is out there, watching his every moveâ??a diabolical threat who knows way too much about Mal's personal history, especially the secrets he's never told anyone, even his recently deceased wife.
