"Irby is forty, and increasingly uncomfortable in her own skin despite what Inspirational Instagram Infographics have promised her. She has left her job as a receptionist at a veterinary clinic, has published successful books and has been friendzoned by Hollywood, left Chicago, and moved into a house with a garden that requires repairs and know-how with her wife in a Blue town in the middle of a Red state where she now hosts book clubs and makes mason jar salads. This is the bourgeois life of a Hallmark Channel dream. She goes on bad dates with new friends, spends weeks in Los Angeles taking meetings with "tv executives slash amateur astrologers" while being a "cheese fry-eating slightly damp Midwest person," "with neck pain and no cartilage in [her] knees," who still hides past due bills under her pillow. Oh dear, another book that seems to be highly valued by a lot of readers, but just didn't work for me. Here are my conjectures about why that's the case:

• It took a while for me to realize that I wasn't "getting" a fair amount of the content of these essays simply because I hadn't read Irby's earlier books. That's kind of interesting because when I start in the middle of a crime novel series, I quickly catch on to the overall scope of the principal characters, their lives, and their relationships. Maybe Irby assumes that the people who will buy this most recent book are those who have read her previously and so already know her complete backstory?
• I've always found references to bodily functions unappealing, and in reading this book I learned that is true even if those references stem from Irby's struggles with Crohn's disease.
• A lot of the pop culture references went right over my head. Despite the fact that Irby claims she is out of the loop on such things, I’m clearly even farther out. And the things she’s interested in don’t appeal to me that much. Probably a generational thing.
• I seem to be immune to a lot of contemporary stand up comics, and Irby’s work shares something in common with them.
• Her unrelenting self-deprecation hit me at a gloomy time (COVID among other things) and just kind of bogged me down more.
• I’ve been spoiled for this kind of self-reflective humor writing by David Sedaris.
• I chose the audiobook, and Irby’s just not that good a narrator (see above reference to Sedaris, who is brilliant at it). It got better when I sped up the playback to 1.25 or 1.50, but Irby just doesn't have a natural (or practiced) raconteur's delivery.

Some of the latter essays are better than those at the start, and there are isolated observations that are well presented if not especially original. On that basis I was going to give it 3 stars rather than 2, but when I realized that I can’t really recommend it, I decided it had to be just 2. ( )

Hilarious. Listened to the audiobook and the author does a great job of narrating. There were only 2 parts that I felt dragged on but I used the skip fwd 15 seconds button on those. ( )

I LOVE SAMANTHA IRBY!!! I don't think I have EVER laughed that hard from a book. Maybe ever, in life! I would do that wheezing, no-sound laugh, with tears and snot pouring down my face. "My God. So funny." That is what I said every time my husband would come check on me, to make sure I was safe while reading this book. I already have one of her other books, "We are never meeting in real life" on the counter, ready to go. There are some books I will not, can not, read at night; Stephen King is terrifying; now I can add Samantha Irby, because she is too damn funny. 5 stars all the way and I don't even care if you don't feel the same way. Didn't even finish, wasn't amusing and a big let down. ( )

Samantha Irby is a blogger and writer, even working in the writers' room for the first season of Shrill. But as she'll tell you, she's never really had ambition or drive and most of her day is procrastinating her writing. In this series of essays, she covers all sorts of things about her life as a middle-aged Black and queer woman, whether it's talking about how aging has affected her ability (and desire) to party, her Crohn's disease, or her hands-off parenting approach to her stepkids.

Humor is hard to hit just right, and I have an odd sense of humor where I don't always love what everyone else seems to - I can't watch The Office or Arrested Development, though I did enjoy Schitt's Creek. With that caveat, I'll say that for me, personally, the essays started at amusing but after awhile, I found them more awkward. She writes with no holds barred discussing bodily functions, sex, and her past experiences of poverty. She swears a lot and cracks jokes over difficult things - which, to be clear, it's her book and her life and she can write about whatever she likes, and there is absolutely an audience for this kind of book. But in the end, it wasn't making me laugh. ( )
