Did the audio for this one and it was almost a dnf because the main characters life was so boring amd horribly dull that a few hours in I could bear it anymore....however, the island...the house...it melted my heart, made me laugh, and may have persuaded a tear or two from me. One the best feel good books of my reading year. ( )

A lovely story of an orphanage of magical children and an uptight bureaucrat who is given the job of inspecting them. What follows is the progessive change of Linus Baker as he learns to let go and fall in love. The book is filled with quirky characters, memorable scenes and a great romance. Well worth the read. ( )

Inventive and clever characters; a sweet story. Sometimes hits too hard on the theme of inclusivity and acceptance but the ingenuity of the setting and characters is impressive. ( )

Forty-year-old Linus Baker lives a lonely, dreary life as a caseworker for DICOMY, the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. After seventeen years of thorough sameness, he is plucked from obscurity by Extremely Upper Management to investigate a special case on Marsyas island, where Arthur Parnassus presides over six extraordinary wards, including Lucy (short for Lucifer).

Linus Baker may be by-the-book (the book in question being DICOMY's Rules and Regulations), but he is honest and compassionate; he really does care about the children and have their best interest in mind. Over the course of a month, he comes to know and understand Talia (a garden gnome), Sal (who transforms into a Pomeranian when frightened), Theodore (a rare wyvern with a hoard of buttons), Chauncey (no one knows what he is; he's been called a monster, but dreams of being a bellhop); Phee, a sprite; and Lucy (the Antichrist, but he also loves Buddy Holly). Most of all, he begins to know Arthur, who might be the most special of all of them, and who burns bright in defense of the children.

Quotes

He'd accepted long ago that some people, no matter how good their heart was or how much love they had to give, would always be alone. (32)

"They fear what they don't understand. And that fear turns to hate for reasons I'm sure even they can't begin to comprehend." (Ms. Chapelwhite to Linus, 65)

"Sometimes...our prejudices color our thoughts when we least expect them to. If we can recognize that, and learn from it, we can become better people." (Arthur, 105)

"Home is where you feel like yourself....Home is where we get to be who we are." (Ms. Chapelwhite, 109)

"There are mysteries that may never be solved, no matter how hard we try. And if we spend too long trying to solve them, we may miss what's right in front of us." (Arthur, 114)

"A person is more than where they come from." (Arthur, 122)

"The things we fear most are often the things we should fear the least." (Arthur, 132)

"Just because you don't experience prejudice in your everyday doesn't stop it from existing for the rest of us." (Ms. Chapelwhite, 138)

"How can we fight a prejudice if we do nothing to change it?" (Arthur, 160)

"I'm just me. I don't know how to be anyone but who I already am. This is how I've always been. It's not much, but I do the best I can with what I have." (Linus, 192)

I find our perception is colored by what we're taught. Even as children, we're told the world is a certain way, and these are the rules. (Linus, 237)

"Hate is loud, but I think you'll learn it's because it's only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard." (Linus to Sal, 276)

"Change comes when people want it enough." (Mayor Helen, 280)

"People can present themselves one way, and once you're sure you know them, once you're sure you've found what you're looking for, they reveal themselves for who they really are." (Arthur to Linus, 298)

"...a life without hope isn't a life lived at all." (Arthur, 305)

"You didn't know it was a possibility. But those of us who dream of impossible things know just how far we can go when pushed to do so." (Arthur, 317)

"Why can't life work whatever way we want it to? What's the point of living if you only do it how others want you to?" (Ms. Chapelwhite, 338-339)

But that was the funny thing about wishes. Sometimes all it took to make them come true was a first step. (368) ( )

Heartwarming story of friendship and magical students. This is outside of my comfort genres, which are historical fiction and literary fiction. The characters were funny, precocious, and memorable. Great message about accepting others and looking beyond our differences. ( )

“There are mysteries that may never be solved, no matter how hard we try. And if we spend too long trying to solve them, we may miss what’s right in front of us. The world is a weird and wonderful place. Why must we try and explain it all away?” (p. 114)
“I am but paper. Brittle and thin. I am held up to the sun, and it shines right through me. I get written on, and I can never be used again. These scratches are a history. They’re a story. Hey tell things for others s to read, but they only see the words, and not what the words are written upon. I am but paper, and though there are many like me, none are exactly the same. I am parched parchment. I have lines. I have holes. Get me wet, and I melt. Light me on fire, and I burn. Take me in hardened hands, and I crumple. I tear. I am but paper. Brittle and thin.” (p. 133)
