This book was neither greatly enjoyable, nor greatly unenjoyable to me. I like the plot and the premise, but I just could not connect with the characters.

The characters are supposed to end the novel in a different place than when we started, but I just didn't see the growth, specifically with Jasmine. She is supposed to go from this reliant, hopeless romantic who is constantly seeking attention and validation from others (specifically romantic partners), and end up as this independent woman who is finally comfortable enough in her own skin, and loves herself enough, that she can be in a successful relationship.

The problem is, even when Jasmine is in her "single" phase, she is still so hung up on Ashton and worrying what he thinks of her and what he wants from her. There is no growth or even progression towards her end character. She just makes herself a little mantra about being ok on her own and says it to herself enough times that she thinks it's true, but her actions speak differently. ( )

This was such a fun book. I learned a new word which sent me down a Wikipedia hole which was fun. Ashton and Jasmine's chemistry was off the charts and I really liked the way the author chose to do some chapters showing us the script/the TV show and then others in the day to day life. I think it helped illustrate the chemistry between the two actors and was just plain fun. Love the cousins and Yadiel and all of Ashton's family. It was just a really fun, well-written book! ( )

I wanted to enjoy this much more than I did. Alexis Daria's You Had Me at Hola is about two telenovela stars, Jasmine and Ashton, who both hope that their starring roles in a new Netflix-like show will be their path to mainstream success and reluctantly find themselves falling in love. Daria dwells a lot on issues of ethnicity, representation, and diversity, and I did appreciate that a lot. There's just a lot of clunky writing in here, with a lot of telling-not-showing and pop psychology that gets confused with actual characterisation (anytime someone talks with apparent sincerity about "practicing intentional vulnerability", I just start to snicker.) This was advertised as being for people who like Jane the Virgin and Ugly Betty. So, I expected campy fun. This seems more like a bodice ripper whose only resemblance to the aforementioned shows is that it features Latinx characters. What a disappointment! Bailed at 56%.
