* Instant New York Times Bestseller * Indie Bestseller * In this stunning new fantasy novel from international bestselling author C. S. Pacat, heroes and villains of a long-forgotten war are reborn and begin to draw new battle lines. This epic fantasy with high-stakes romance will sit perfectly on shelves next to beloved fantasy novels like the Infernal Devices series, the Shadow and Bone trilogy, and the Red Queen series. Sixteen-year-old dock boy Will is on the run, pursued by the men who killed his mother. Then an old servant tells him of his destiny to fight beside the Stewards, who have sworn to protect humanity if the Dark King ever returns. Will is thrust into a world of magic, where he starts training for a vital role in the oncoming battle against the Dark. As London is threatened and old enmities are awakened, Will must stand with the last heroes of the Light to prevent the fate that destroyed their world from returning to destroy his own. Like V.E. Schwab's A Darker Shade of Magic and Shelby Mahurin's Serpent & Dove, Dark Rise is more than just high intrigue fantasy--it's fast-paced, action-packed, and completely surprising. Readers will love exploring the rich setting of nineteenth-century London. This thrilling story of friendship, deception, loyalty, and betrayal is sure to find a passionate audience of readers.… (més)

This book is so worth it. It started slow, boring and I almost dropped it, but since it's Pacat I was expecting some slow development, and then after 60% it was just so absolutely awesome????? I can't wait another year to read the next book, someone please make the author write it faster ( )

What..? WHAT?!!?! Where's the rest of the book???

During my read of this book, I fluctuated between giving it 3 stars to 5 stars and I wasn't quite sure, because it was longer than I was hoping for. But. When the ending arrived, I was stunned it was only that long.

Around Ch.27 I got bored and wasn't sure why the story was dragging at that point. But the author has based the story on its twists and turns, the mystery and revelation mattering more than the adventurous fantasy. I admit, while reading it, I got some Harry Potter and Lotr vibes, due to the chosen-one trope, the dark shadows which I imagined like the Dementors, the magic, the dark power... however things are not how they appear and not how I predicted them to be.

I had formed two ships (as in relationships) that I thought would sail, and was dumbfounded when- certain kissing scene happened. I hadn't read anything else Pacat, however, I knew this book was queer and was utterly disappointed by some of the developments. HOWEVER! It was not as I thought it was. You can see I'm trying not to spoil anything here.

What I'm trying to say, is that I'm excited about how things turned out to be. I love me some good dark plot twist. And James. Every time he appeared in a scene, he immediately caught my interest. Some of the characters were likeable, most of them were interesting, but none of them were put out there in vain; the author had a purpose for all of them and I can see it clearly now.

I'm glad I finished this book and didn't drop it. There were times I was questioning whether it was weirdly written or if I was tired and couldn't read it. But it was simply building up to a point and the structure relied on the idea of revelation.

I liked this book. I thought it was a standalone. I was hoping it was, at first. Now I'm glad it isn't.

I'm afraid that if I talk more about the characters and the story, I'm gonna spoil something. And I don't want to, because the enjoyment of this book is based on you not knowing anything. So let's keep it that way.

Read this book if you like mystery, dark magic, chosen-one tropes and plot twists! ( )

An average 3 star fantasy at first, but there were some interesting turns hidden in the second half and I guess the second half was only this impactful because the first half felt so standard?
There is so much delicious dramatic irony... It's in the dialogue, the descriptions, the foreshadowing and the way the characters think. I could not stop thinking about this book. ( )

As you start this book, you may think that it's another one of the mediocre "Chosen One" stories that are so ubiquitous in fantasy, especially children's and YA fantasy. You'll immediately notice a lot of capitalized words signifying important worldbuilding vocabulary, a convention that mediocre YA fantasy is infamous for. It's also very, very obvious that this author has read Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. But if you can get past all the mediocrity front-loaded in the first half of the book, you may be surprised where the story takes you. There are some great character moments, good twists, and compelling relationships in the latter half of this book. Dark Rise is mostly memorable because it has a lot more to say than most YA: in drawing on Tolkien, Rowling, and other fantasy of the kind in the way it does, it makes a critical commentary on those works that I've never seen presented in this format. The book also alludes strongly and interestingly to themes of queerness, race, and immigration, even without making issues like racism and homophobia explicitly central to the plot. In the end, I found the book to be fairly enjoyable and not at all generic--and though many parts of it were awkward or not to my taste, the ending of this book left me desperate for the next one. Overall I enjoyed this book but it somehow felt both rushed and slow? I dunno. I do predict that the sequel will likely be even better now that all the players have been established so Im very much looking forward to that.
Also the PLOT TWIST. I saw it coming but still loved it and I really need to see how the other characters react when they find out. ( )
