Listen to this read on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qxK1W8kzcE Augustus and His Smile is a beautiful picture book that tells the story of sad tiger who is in search of happiness. In order to find his smile, Augustus embarks on a journey, swimming with the fish, dancing in the puddles, and climbing the mountains of the world. Through this experience, Augustus realizes that his smile has always been with him. In order to find it, Augustus learns to embrace all that life has to offer. This sweet and simple story will appeal to a large audience because the message is one in which everyone can relate. In addition to appreciating the message that Catherine Rayner sends through the story of Augustus, I am taken by the beauty of her illustrations. In fact, we join Augustus on his journey, recognizing the allure of the world, as if we were seeing it for the first time. I think Augustus and His Smile could be used in any classroom. In fact, I believe it is a story that will grow with a reader. Rayner's tale of the young tiger encourages conversation about how we should live our lives. The theme is common throughout the literature used in language arts classes of all levels. As a result, it would pair nicely with texts that send a similar message or with those that communicate something different. I also think this book could be used at the beginning of the school year or at the end of the school year to encourage students to actively explore and engage in their own learning process.
