A secluded mountain lodge. The perfect getaway. So remote no one will ever find you. The promise of a luxury vacation at a secluded wilderness spa has brought together eight lucky guests. But nothing is what they were led to believe. As a fierce storm barrels down and all contact with the outside is cut off, the guests fear that it's not a getaway. It's a trap. Each one has a secret. Each one has something to hide. And now, as darkness closes in, they all have something to fear-including one another. Alerted to the vanished party of strangers, homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton must brave the brutal elements of the mountains to find them. But even Mason and Callie have no idea how precious time is. Because the clock is ticking, and one by one, the guests of Forest Shadow Lodge are being hunted. For them, surviving becomes part of a diabolical game.… (més)

Eight lucky guests have been promised a vacation at a fabulous spa located in the wilderness. After they arrive it soon becomes obvious that they were lured there under false pretenses. And now they must worry about their lives because it looks like somebody wants to pick them off, one by one. The story alternates between the past in which the murders are taking place as well as the present when we find out someone is alive and homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton are trying to figure out what happened. The author gives interesting backstories to both Mason and Callie making them the most developed characters in the book. It’s bit tricky at first to keep track of all the guests as the story bounces around from each of the characters but because the list keeps getting shorter as more them die it does become easier t keep the characters straight. I read a lot of mysteries and I have to say that I was very impressed with this one. This is not a romance/suspense thriller. This is thriller all the way and should appeal to all fans of the genre. A nice, suspenseful homage to one of my favorite books ever, Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". Set in the wilds of Canada with plenty of tension, tight writing, and atmosphere galore! ( )

In the Dark by author Loreth Anne White is advertised as an homage to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None and I admit I was rather doubtful as to whether this was a tribute or would turn into a plot ripoff. With my skepticism firmly in place I started the read and it didn’t take too many pages before I was fully absorbed by this murder mystery.

Nine people are invited to a new wilderness lodge in a remote, inaccessible area of British Columbia, they are all attending this function as they are business owners who want to nail down contracts for their services. These services cover a wide area that include security, cleaning, catering, and others, all of which a new lodge would need. They are being flown into the wilderness by a pilot who is trying to pick up the contract for bringing guests into this inaccessible place. On the morning they are to leave, they find that one of their members has fallen ill and will not be attending. After they take off, this ill person dies, making him the first victim.

After arriving at their destination, it soon becomes clear that there is something very strange going on, someone is out for revenge and intends to make each of the remaining eight pay. We follow two story lines, both the ongoing chaos at the lodge, and, a week later, the rescue party lead by RCMP investigator, Mason Deniaud and Callie Sutton, head of the local Search and Rescue Team.

I was fully engaged by this story. The fluid timeline allows the reader to experience first hand the horror as it unfolds at the lodge and also enables them to be part of the rescue team a week later. In the Dark is a fun, atmospheric thriller with multiple narrators, not all of which are totally trustworthy and I definitely felt it gave honors to Ms. Christie’s original work. ( )

I really enjoyed this book, though there were points when the author went a little off with the thesaurus and it was a little distracting. Otherwise, it was a good book and a quick read. I'll be checking out her other work. ( )

Clever plot using as a starting point Agatha Christie's "Ten little Indians" which is referenced in the plot. A group of eager would-be contractors for a new high-end tourist attraction in remote British Columbia, take a float plane trip to see what they believe will be a lucrative business prospect. However, it turns out that not only are they all hiding secrets they would like to remain hidden, but they are all connected to each other in some way from their past. Of course the past always has a habit of catching up with you, but it is left to newly arrived RCMP sergeant, Mason and Callie, a local search and rescue volunteer to try to figure what has happened to the party. As someone familiar with BC and having travelled by float plane myself, I enjoyed the descriptions of the area where the plot unfolds and its links to Vancouver and Burnaby, places I know. ( )
