On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It's a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days. The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress. The bride's oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast. And then someone turns up dead. Who didn't wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?… (més)

Couldn't decide if it was brilliant or contrived... ( )

Hmm, not my favorite book. Liked the setting and characters - the plot not so much. Good mystery however. ( )

The concept of The Guest List was a great idea, however I wouldn’t say it’s a thriller or suspenseful novel. It was very slow and I knew what had happened and who’d done it before the end of the novel. I thought it was pretty anticlimactic.

1.5/5 rounded up because I'm sure it could've been worse. There were good ideas here and the setting was great. Very atmospheric.

Everything else though... meh.

All the characters read the same: depressed, have a 'dark secret' (I use this term lightly), and they all have a bone to pick. I'm not much of a mystery reader but it was pretty obvious who died and who did it based solely on the fact that the victim is the most charming then it's cemented that they'll die as soon as the second secret that involves them comes out -- all the others were unnecessary imo. The killer is the one who never draws attention to their woes/murder motives. I think it was too obvious trying to make literally everyone a red herring.

Book pacing sucked, too. I feel like the time jumps were forced in order to present the idea that there is an actual mystery, at some point in the book, so you don't end up rage quitting while listening to overgrown teenagers whine about their dark pasts for 200 pages.

Ending was lackluster, everyone just went on their merry way and that was that. Pretty sure it was supposed to be some kind of female comeuppance story since just about every woman in this book was wronged by the 'victim' but it was so ridiculous in how everything 'tied together' in the last like 20% that I want to laugh. What are the chances? Slim.

Also: DID THEY FIND PETE AT THE END AFTER HE WENT MISSING? Feel like that might be important.

The island idea was cool though. ( )

Looking for a modern day who done it thriller against a wedding setting, then this is for you. I enjoyed the structure of how the story is told from the different characters perspectives, I'm thinking from a movie standpoint it would be as if the camera is panning from one individual's perspective to the next and in some cases within the same scene which is pretty cool. In fact, this book is great material for a movie. There is a great buildup through the story that is supported by the descriptions of the weather, the island, the wedding venue, the arrangements for the wedding and the night before events as it all builds up to a crescendo with the murder being committed and the different characters revealing their motives for doing the deed. It certainly kept me turning the pages all the way till the end. This was my first book by Lucy, will give the Hunting Party a read next. ( )

Foley...outdoes herself again with this page-turning thriller; it's like experiencing Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None rolled into one ... The island and the ancient folly where the wedding party stays are themselves characters, adding to the feeling of almost supernatural mystery and the unease that something is lurking in the shadows and getting ready to strike ... Only a handful of thriller writers can accomplish what Foley does here: weave a complex plot from the perspectives of eight characters plus an omniscient narrator without causing confusion or reader exhaustion when the plot bounces from one person to the next. Fans of Christie, Louise Penny, and Ruth Rendell will absolutely love this book, which doesn't reveal its secrets until the very last page.

Foley defers disclosing the murder victim’s identity until quite late, but she undercuts the suspense with obvious indications of who it is. The tension of the setup isn’t quite matched by the reveals, though the nicely creepy setting compensates somewhat. Readers seeking thrills will find plenty.
