Knocking at death's door. Bargaining for a second chance. Seems like a heck of a way to find out about an alien invasion... Vietnam vet Albert Jenkins is battling a bulging waistline and a passion for drink. So when a towering pile of scrap rocket parts falls and crushes the stubborn curmudgeon, he thinks it's finally the end. But just as he's about to take one final breath, a snarky alien parasite offers him a deal: his life in return for sharing his body. With a little coaxing from his new pop-culture-loving inner resident, AJ's broken carcass improves so much that even an old flame is impressed. But his bright outlook fizzles when he discovers he's at ground zero of a galactic conspiracy to strip Earth of precious resources humans don't even know exist. Can the unlikely partners join forces and use AJ's rusty military skills to raise the alarm? Or, will the alien invaders put him down once and for all? Junkyard Pirate is the first book in an imaginative space opera series. If you like grizzled soldiers, clever twists and turns, and intergalactic tactical pairings, then you'll love Jamie McFarlane's fast-paced alien adventure. Buy Junkyard Pirate to boot the invaders back to where they came from today!… (més)

Science fiction, meets adventure, and a bit of romance. It does mention the Vietnam war.

The naming of the main character is inconsistent. It does include a little bit of humour which is nice.

Sometimes it's the right people, at the right place, at the right time (with the help of some magical people).

There are times in the book where it skips ahead a period of time without telling the reader which is sometimes confusing and requires the reader to pause for a moment before continuing.

"Yes. You humans have such a whimsical history," she said.

""You might want to step out for this," Stern warned. AJ bit back a response about not being able to step anywhere."

""You really get off on changing your appearance, don't you?"
"I have spent decades pasted to the side of space debris. I find humanity's expression of individuality quite refreshing. Surely, you wouldn't deny me a small pleasure?""

“No one said English was easy to understand.”

"Did you ever read Alice in Wonderland?"
Darnell quirked his head to the side.
“Buddy, Alice was strictly amateur hour.”" ( )

McFarlane, Jamie. Junkyard Pirate. Junkyard Pirate No. 1. Fickle Dragon, 2019.
Junkyard Pirate ticks off some items on my fun-to-read list—a near-future world that doesn’t stray far from our own, two or three lively characters who talk to each other in a nonliterary way, and a science fiction premise that only makes me scratch my head a little. The protagonist, Al Jenkins, a well-over-the-hill Vietnam vet with a pot belly and a taste for booze, runs a low-profit junkyard. One night, his spine is crushed when a bunch of rocket casings fall on him, but his life is saved when his body is invaded by a symbiotic alien looking for a host to help her get off planet. It is a premise I have seen before, sometimes done better, often done worse. Three and a half stars rounded up. ( )

Appropriate Title

Rely on Jamie to take an aged Vietnam veteran and mix in alien invasion to make it a rocking good cocktail of a story. Yes, I already downloaded the next one. ( )

I hate doing this

But I struggled reading this book. It felt...thin. Like the characters didn’t really have depth. They said the right things, but it was a superficial understanding. As if even the main characters were secondary. They kept telling me who they were instead of *being*.

There was also quite a bit of MarySue happening. Where exactly did an automatic weapon come from?!? Why didn’t the Beltigerskians dominate the internet and fund whatever they needed?

I *really* liked the Privateer series. This had some promise, but was poorly written. It reads like cheap SF. ( )
