“And she can’t believe Jane had the nerve, the audacity, to become the one thing August can’t resist: a mystery.”

I do not say this lightly: after falling head-over-heels in love with RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE in 2019, I would read literally anything Casey McQuiston attached their name to. Their newest book ONE LAST STOP does not disappoint, serving up a straight shot of joy in the form of a rom-com time travel novel with tons of LGBTQ rep.

August is a twenty-three-year old perpetual student who has spent her early adulthood hopping from city to city, never settling for long enough to make connections or put down roots. And this is just fine by her, as she doesn’t believe that anyone or anyplace will ever really feel like home. So when she arrives in New York City and finds herself living with an eclectic group of roommates who happily make space for her in their loud and love-filled lives, August is hesitant. And when she boards the Q train on her first day of school covered in coffee, the last thing she expects is for the woman of her dreams to offer her a scarf to cover the stain. But she does. Which ordinarily wouldn’t be enough to shake August’s uncertainty about her new city, except that there’s something special about this woman that August can’t seem to put her finger on…

The next time August boards the Q, Subway Girl is there. And the next time, and the next… Soon, August realizes that the “something special” she can’t quite place may be a bit more supernatural than she’d originally thought.

ONE LAST STOP is the perfect balance of love-at-first-sight romance and heartwarming found family with a sprinkling of sci-fi and true crime for good measure. One thing McQuiston does incredibly well is depict authentic and heartfelt friendships — a skill that shines in ONE LAST STOP as they introduce us to a diverse cast of characters that feel like old friends you would grab a drink (or a stack of pancakes) with.

A note: this book is geared toward mature readers than I typically review for. As a “new adult” novel, ONE LAST STOP does include more explicit sex scenes than a typical YA novel would.

CW: sexual content, homophobia, racism, talk of death & anxiety ( )

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston was a delightful magic realism novel, and I enjoyed reading it immensely. Not quite sure what she’s looking for other than to escape a difficult childhood August Landry transfers to college in New York, and a notice stuck to a Popeye’s garbage can open up a whole new world for her. She finds an apartment and roommates who become her found family, a job and one day on the subway, a girl with whom she falls into love with at first sight. Every time August takes the Q train, Jane is there, and they develop a friendship that grows into something more, but when August asks Jane to meet her elsewhere, she always declines, Jane can’t leave the Q train, and she’s been riding it since 1977, but it’s not until she meets August that she begins to remember who she is. August and her found family create a plan to rescue Jane from the endless subway rides, but it could mean that Jane will go back to when she first got stuck in time, or it could mean that she will simply cease to exist. This story about love, and friends and family, both blood and found, was so much fun to read, and I highly recommend it. Steam Level: Medium. In the beginning, it was slow listening for me. I did the audio version of this book. So slow that I was almost done with listening and this was only after a third of the way into the book. Yet, I decided to stick with the book a bit longer. So glad that I did as my feelings with towards this book did an upward tick of excitement.

To be honest, if it was not for Jane and August's other friends, I probably would have forgotten about August. She was not the most interesting person but she did open up and start to blossom as the story progressed. Jane is so cool that she is too cool for me. I was a nerd back in the day and would have had reservations like August. It may have started out as "just research" but it ended in love.

If you are a reader who has wanted to try a LGBTQIA book, than here is your chance. This one is not in your face but sweet and charming. The case of characters are a bit quirky and people that I would want to hang out with. ( )

Read to p. 130. Just not the book for me. I am not a fan of the paranormal, and this read YA. That said the characters are lovely, and the portrait of Brooklyn living and urban found family is lovely, and I recommend this for teens and young adults unreservedly. I am just too logical and too old.
