The setting of this book is in Westfield, Massachusetts. It is a story about two old men who went through the March of 1888 blizzard. They tell their own personal experiences of the time when they were snowed in for the blizzard. Setting had a big factor in this book because the two men were total opposites. One man was outgoing and the other was a shy introvert, so the illustrator depicted half of the page for one man and the other half of the other man. At the beginning, the men were depicted by their social skills. Since one man was talkative they showed him entertaining everyone and then they showed the other man sitting in a chair reading by himself. Then the snow stormed happened and the roles were switched, this is where setting has a lot to do with the plot. The talkative man got stuck in the barn with the animals and then the shy man got stuck inside with the crowd, both men were out of their elements and it showed by the setting of the story. The conclusion of the book ended with the men talking about that terrible experiences and them sitting on the same porch as they did as children, but now being old men. ( )

This book tells the story of a horrible blizzard told from two different perspectives. Grandpa Otis and Grandpa Clark recall the day that the blizzard came and how they lived through it. I had mixed feelings about this book. I think they illustrator did a great job portraying the storm from both perspectives, but nothing about this story stood out to me. I like the idea that they are looking back on something that happened when they were younger and sharing how different yet the same they saw things, but I am sure that if I was trying to find a book to read to my class with a similar topic I could find something else. This was book was about two grandparents who experienced a historical blizzard that happened in 1888. The two grandads talked about how miserable the 3 days they spent in the blizzard. Each of them was working on the first day when they got caught in the storm. At some point in the story they both mention trying to shovel out of all the snow and they end up shoveling meeting up with each other. They made a natural disaster not seem so bad. This book was great at talking about being with family and to laugh even at the not so fun things. ( )

This was a really cute story that described a storm that happened in the past. I really enjoyed how the story was shown in dialog. It also showed how long someone can have a friend which could be a really important lesson in a child's life. Here in Louisiana, we do not experience much snow, so this is an interesting story to show what it could be like. ( )

Terrible Storm is based on the true event of the 1888 blizzard that happened from March 11-14th. Two grandfather, Walt and Fred, reminisced on those 3 terrible days that spent in that blizzard that actually brought them together. They talked about how it was a nice sunny day and the snow came out of no where. Walt discussed how he was delivering mil for work when he got stuck in the snow and found the first place he can find to ride out the storm. Fred was drawing wood on the farm then he had to stay in the barn for 3 days with only apples to eat. Plus he had to share with his animals. When the storm passed, they book dug their was out and ended up crossing paths and the rest is history. They have been best friends since. I enjoyed this book because of how cute the friendship is between these old men. It's crazy that a terrible storm brought people together to be best friends for life. I can relate because I have people I'm still friends with that I met in Houston for evacuating Hurricane Katrina. This book can also be a learning experience for children because when terrible things happen like tornados, hurricanes, floods, shootings, etc. people needs to come together, help each other, and great things can come from like friendships. That is what happened for Fred and Walt The illustrations in the book were great. The snow pages were really beautiful. This is great read for young children. It has a lot of speaking lines from the grandfathers talking so you can change up your voice for those roles and keep the kids interested. ( )
