New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh returns to her breathtaking Psy-Changeling Trinity series with a mating that shouldn't exist . . . Alpha wolf Selenka Durev's devotion to her pack is equaled only by her anger at anyone who would harm those under her care. That currently includes the empaths who've flowed into her city for a symposium that is a security nightmare, a powder keg just waiting for a match. Ethan Night is an Arrow who isn't an Arrow. Numb and disengaged from the world, he's loyal only to himself. Assigned as part of the security force at a world-first symposium, he carries a dark agenda tied to the power-hungry and murderous Consortium. Then violence erupts and Ethan finds himself crashing into the heart and soul of an alpha wolf. Mating at first sight is a myth, a fairytale. Yet Selenka's wolf is resolute: Ethan Night, broken Arrow and a man capable of obsessive devotion, is the mate it has chosen. Even if the mating bond is full of static and not quite as it should be. Because Selenka's new mate has a terrible secret, his mind surging with a power that is a creature of madness and death . . .… (més)

3.5 stars A few less scenes of sex and this book would have really sung for me. I like the characters and the background, though we didn't get as much depth with this one as [b:Silver Silence|36184513|Silver Silence (Psy-Changeling Trinity, #1; Psy-Changeling, #16)|Nalini Singh|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1504594997l/36184513._SY75_.jpg|52534858], which is also set in Russia. Or maybe, I just like the bears more ... ( )

My twin sister has been telling me to read this series for years and despite liking the other Nalini Singh's I had read I never got around to reading it. After reading these books I can't imagine why I hesitated to read them ; they are really good. The story is fresh and original, the writing style is engaging and the characters are so well written that you truly get invested in their lives. I have enjoyed all the books in this series psy, changeling and human as they are all fascinating in their own way. ( )

I don't typically write reviews. I love Nalini Singh. I LOVE the Psy Changeling series. This book frustrated me. Period. It was rushed, not satisfying, and not the emotionally charging story Nalini normally takes you on.

Mild Spoilers - no plot details, just high level commentary.

1. Mating by First Sight - While I'm not a fan of the "[Relationship] at First Sight" trope, it can be done correctly. This was not. Essentially, it just happened within the first 5 minutes of the story, before I'm even emotionally invested in the main characters. How can I be invested in the relationship if I barely care about the characters yet? What was worse, was I never convinced they grew to love each other or feel for each other past the initial instinctual connection.

2. The characters - I do admit I enjoy becoming acquainted with characters from previous books and seeing "their" book come up eventually. For Alpha Night, One of the MCs we never new existed and the other we had barely seen. I just had no connection to them after investing in this series. I do admit, after Wolf Rain, I wish she had tackled one of the other characters particularly from the BlackSea or Windhaven packs. BUT that's not a deal breaker. I can appreciate the need to introduce new characters or make the book easy to read even if you haven't read the rest of the series. But you need to give me some character development. The way this book was written, I was forced to buy into this relationship and the characters before we saw who these people were.

3. The relationship itself - it had zero depth. I never believed they were into each other. Ever. Not even in the last chapter. They just existed around each other and got intimate, but there was no emotional depth. The book kept "telling" us that they wanted each other...they kept going through the motions, but the motions never made sense for the reality they had gone through.

4. Rushed Timeline - 80% of the book takes place in the span of a 2 days. They rush from catastrophe to catastrophe. Like within the span of an hour or two I think 3 major crises happen. You aren't ever left the opportunity to grasp the impact of the situation, when another rears its head.

5. The series arc itself - if you are a fan of the Psy network story arc, how it's evolving....you will be disappointed to know we are 20 books in, and all of a sudden three new concepts are introduced that just doesn't mesh very well with our understanding of the Psy universe. It just felt like the author thought up some new complication and resurrected & reformatted a villain we had lost track of and just made the whole universe a little more complex than it needed to be.

*sigh* There were a few other things, but I'll leave it at that. I was disappointed. I don't think this story added anything of true value or depth, while also sending the overarching story in a different possible direction than was necessary.

I will still keep reading, because I do think Nalini's writing is superb, this universe is intriguing, and I'm emotionally invested. I think this book was just not one that met the high mark of all her others. ( )

Alpha Night is book four in the Psy-Changeling Trinity and book nineteen in the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh and narrated by Angela Dawe.

We return to Russia where we get to visit the BlackEdge Wolf Pack. This is the pack that neighbors the StoneWater Bear Pack. I like that we got to meet the wolf pack and return to Russia.

This time around we get Selenka Durev, the Alpha of BlackEdge and an Arrow Ethan Night. Our couple have an instant mating and we’ve not had this in the series before. I wasn’t as smitten with Selenka and Ethans romance because of this instant mating. I really missed the courtship, play, and fun that we have seen in previous Changing/Psy pairings. The other issue I had is that they don’t know each other and in less then 24hrs they are having sex. It just didn’t have the connection that I’ve come to feel and love with other couples.

The action, adventure, and world-building are captivating. I enjoy how Singh weaves this series and adds new things to it. It just keeps growing. The mystery about the net and those hurting it was fascinating. I’m looking forward to the hunt and how they will solve this new problem in the Psy net. We also are treated to another shifter group visiting the area. That storyline was interesting though I would have liked more closer on that storyline.

All and all I enjoyed Alpha Night, but I wasn’t as enamored. Even with it not being my favorite I still look forward to more installments.

Narrator: I enjoyed listening and highly recommend the audiobooks for this series. Angela Dawe is a wonderful narrator and did a great job. All the characters were distinctive and the story flowed nicely.

Rated: 3.5 Stars

Definite bad decisions book club, but I knew that going in. Totally worth it. Instant favorite. Moderate cliffhanger at the end with the architect story arc still continuing, and some risk of future ickiness around people with mental illness as perpetrators (one of my least favorite stereotypes and deus ex machina devices), depending on how scarab is played out. Everything else lived up to my expectations, and I can't wait to read it again and hear the audiobook. ( )
