An Instant New York Times Bestseller! A BuzzFeed Best Young Adult Book of 2020 Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Serpent & Dove, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River. The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang--a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette's first love...and first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns--and grudges--aside and work together, for if they can't stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.… (més)

This book was kind of meh. The story had potential but it was VERY wordy and it was really dragged down by this. It could easily have been 200 pages shorter. It also ends on a big cliffhanger, which is seriously uncool. It was hard to relate to the characters and I found myself not really caring what happened to them because they didn’t really have redeeming qualities. Definitely not one of my favorites. ( )

This was an interesting spin on the Romeo and Juliet tale, taking place in Shanghai in the 19th century. I love that they were warring gang factions and that there were political parties warring for power.
The ending ending was what I was hoping for, can't wait to read book 2. ( )

These Violent Delights caught my attention ever since I heard it was a Romeo and Juliet retelling, set in Shanghai during the 1920s. Also, the amount of hype this book was getting was enormous so I was afraid I was missing out by not reading it.

In These Violent Delights, we follow the heirs of two rival gangs, Roma and Juliette, who used to be lovers until a betrayal, four years before, lead them to go their separate ways. Juliette is back in the gangster-ruled Shanghai and soon she realizes that there's a kind of madness going around and killing people. With everything happening, Roma and Juliette decide to put aside the hate they feel for each other and the blood feud between their families to prevent this madness to sweep the lives of their city's people.
Well, as I've said, this book got me at Romeo and Juliet's retelling, but as soon as I found out about this madness, I was taken a bit back - I'm not usually into fantasy/sci-fi or whatever this should be considered. However, I soon found myself turning each page and wishing to know what would happen next and what the hell was going on in that city! I did feel, however, that some chapters were too long, even though that as it comes to the end, it really picks up the pace. Nevertheless, I believe that Chloe Gong did a great job in describing 1920s-gangster-ruled Shanghai and taking us to the busy city streets, while Nationalists and Communists were fighting for their interests. It was really a mess, but a great mess to dive into.
Regarding the characters, I really loved most of them. Roma and Juliette were amazing in their own ways, with their own and opposite personalities, with Roma having the softest heart and Juliette being the true definition of a badass. Marshal and Benedikt were really nice and I can't wait to find out how their story will unveil in the next book. I really liked Kathleen and I'm still intrigued about Rosalind - I still haven't decided how I feel about her.
Oh, and that ending? Please release the next book already, I really need to know how things will unfold after all of that.

To sum up, I really think it was a great book, being a solid 4.5 ⭐ for me. The only issue for me was really the long chapters that got me distracted at some point, but it was really secondary once the book comes to a close and leaves you begging for the sequel. ( )

I didn’t know how much I needed a 1920’s Shanghai gang version of Romeo and Juliet until I read that book. I loved all of the moments that corresponded with the original R&J and how Chloe Gong wove them together into her own unique story. I loved the tension between the gangs and I’m such a sucker for the 1920’s aesthetic. And the way she threaded in the political climate of that era really made it a more realistic in depth experience. That being said there were a few things that took away from the story for me which is why the rating is a bit lower than I’d originally hoped to give it. I feel like my main problem was Juliette and Roma. Their relationship just really didn’t hit it for me which is unfortunate given that this is a R&J retelling. Often times I found myself enjoying the supporting characters much more. I loved Marshall and Benedikt and Kathleen and I really liked Rosalind at first but she kind of annoyed me towards the end.
Overall it was an enjoyable unique story and after that ending I’m definitely going to have to read the sequel even if it’s just for the drama of when everyone finds out Marshall isn’t really dead. XD ( )

Couldn't finish. Not because it was bad, per say, but it wasn't a type of book I wanted to read. ( )
