"Dimity Dumpty" retells the tale of "Humpty Dumpty," but includes his sister, Dimity, and her quest to find her own voice. Working in the circus, Dimity never found her confidence to perform with the rest of her family, and often found herself venturing off alone. When Humpty hurts himself, Dimity is determined that she is going to help her brother. Finding her voice, Dimity manages to save her brothers life. The illustrations could have been executed a bit better, but they did convey the text. The theme of the book focuses on being brave, and sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zones.

I would incorporate this book into a creative writing lesson. This book does a great job at modeling how to take an old tale and rewrite it. ( )

Dimity Dumpty, Humpty Dumpty’s little sister, was shy as can be and never brought attention to herself. She was the opposite of her brother who always stole the attention by causing mischief. The Dumpty family traveled with the circus and performed in different towns, but Dimity slid under the radar because she didn’t take part in the acts with her family. Instead, she softly played her flute out of sight. She was never caught in the spotlight like Humpty.
One day, after Humpty got himself into trouble and fell off a wall he had just spray painted, Dimity came running. She bandaged Humpty up and called for help, but no one who passed by could hear her. Dimity then ran back to the circus tent, went on stage for the first time, and pleaded with the crowd for help. With Dimity out front, everyone rushed to Humpty’s side.
Dimity was able to save the day and finally found her voice. After this, everything changed. Dimity never joined her family in the circus acts, but people did begin to listen to her play beautifully on her flute.
Graham’s account of Dimity Dumpty sends an encouraging message, urging readers to find their voice. This is the perfect story for introverts who often find themselves struggling to voice their opinions. ( )

A very strange story with very loose references to the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. The story is something that could be relatable for shy children, as the heroine is herself very shy. The artwork was OK, and the story definitely had its humorous moments. It would also be appealing to children since they most likely already know the nursery rhyme and would find this unique take on the story fun.

This story is about how Dimity Dumpty, Humpty Dumpty's younger sister came to his rescue after he tumbled off the wall he was tagging. Dimity was a true hero as she saved her brother's life.

This book is about the Dumpty Family from little sister Dimity's point of view. Throughout this story Humpty is portrayed as a trouble maker and Dimity is the shy sister who never wants to be the center of attention. When Humpty falls off the wall, Dimity is able to find her voice to help out her brother.

I did not like this story and would not use it in my classroom. ( )
