Rachel has a podcast and this time she travels to a small North Carolina town for a rape trial to feature it for the latest season. While there, she starts receiving messages from Hannah, whose sister died many years ago, but whose death was brushed under the rug and ignored. So while Rachel is trying to report on the nuance of the rape trial, she is trying to uncover the history of Jenny's death. I liked the interweaving of timelines and the interweaving of Rachel's story and the letters from Hannah. I got frustrated a couple of times when I thought Hannah should come out and meet Rachel already, but I guess it was to be able for her tell the whole story of what happened way back then in her letters and emails to Rachel. I hate injustice of any kind so a couple of things rubbed me the wrong way, but also fit and seemed more real life, so I liked them for that. Rachel was likable and I'd listen to her podcast, if it was real. Rachel, Hannah, and one other person were really the only characters that seemed really fleshed out. Most of them seemed pretty two dimensional and therefore I had a hard time really caring about any of them, except the raped girl, of course. But in all, yeah, good book. ( )

I found this book a difficult but compelling read/listen. The subject is rape. The book highlights all the horror of rape. The victim is vilified. The accused is vilified. The biases of society are on display -- the male is declared guilty in public opinion until proven innocent. The victim is gulilty until proven innocent. Innocent until proven guilty is absent. The small-town mentality and behavior are on full display.

It is a compelling read. It is an important read. The author's style of presenting her story is unique -- the use of a blog narrative interspersed with a typical story tell is different. It confirms for women all that they fear. It should be a rude awakining for all men.

Very tough read as far as the topic. But I thought i had it figured out after the first few chapters and i was WAY off. I love those kinds of twists. ( )

Rachel Krall is well known for her true crime podcast. Season three is going to be about a crime against a young girl by the towns golden boy. However while Rachel is covering the case she starts to receive mysterious letters about a past crime.

I really enjoyed this book but trigger warning as the story is about rape. A hard hitting subject but the story is very compelling.

This book I fled through when i did have the opportunity to pick the book up. I enjoyed that the book had a court case and reminded me a little of books by Jodi Picoult. The book also had another story from the past which connects it all together.

I really enjoyed this book and have read nothing by this author before but will definitely read more by her. ( )

I'm going 4.5 stars on this one (but rounding up on Goodreads).

I'm surprised by how much I got into this book. This is your standard mystery/thriller book but, even though I knew the bad guy had to be among a specific group, I was never sure which one it was until the final reveal. That doesn't happen to me often and I absolutely love it when it does. When it does and it's feasible and not because of bullshit twists that go far beyond my ability to suspend disbelief.

I stayed interested in both the current rape case and the cold case and never found myself being disappointed by moving from one to the other like I am sometimes when one story is much more interesting than the other. The author did a fantastic job, as far as I'm concerned.

This is one of those books where if you can do audio, you should. The protagonist is a true crime podcaster and the portions where she's actually doing podcast segments have the bonus of music and sound effects. It was a lovely addition and never distracting.

Ms. Goldin has a new fan!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing the audiobook! ( )
