Why was reading so hard?

When Adam started kindergarten, the teacher wanted him to learn about letters. But "p" looked like "q," and "b" looked like "d." Adam would rather color or mold clay. In first grade, his teacher wanted him to put the letters into words so he could read. That was the beginning of the Alphabet War. "Was" looked like "saw," and "there" looked like "then." Almost everyone else in his class was learning to read, but Adam was fighting a war against letters.

In second grade, he had to learn to spell, which was also impossible. Now he was so frustrated he got into trouble and had to go to the principal's office. At last, in third grade, he got the right kind of help. Slowly he began to do better. During fourth grade, he learned that he could excel in other things. That gave him the confidence to take chances with reading. One day he found himself reading a book all by himself!

I loved this story, how in the end Adam believes in himself and knows he has to work a little harder if he wants to get better. This story is about a young boy name Adam who is having problems with learning letters and sounds. And he can't put those two together to make words or read. He rather play with mold or color pages because he is good at those things. But his teachers wants him to learn to read, so she put a plan in place for Adam. He got a special teacher just to help him make sense of words. This book shows readers that everyone learns in different ways and some people are better at certain things than others. ( )

I liked this book because it really broke down Adam's struggles to readers in a way people without dyslexia would understand. I really liked how for the first half of the book, Adam kept saying "I can't do this" over and over, but at the end of the story Adam finally realized that he CAN do it. I like that the book told us that Adam can do it, but it will take him a little extra effort. ( )

After Adam learns that he can do things and believes in himself he knew he could do anything. I found this book very interesting because my 6-year-old cousin was just diagnosed with dyslexia. I am so interested in learning about dyslexia and love doing research on it. This book really shows that one can do anything if you just believe and put your mind to it and could be helpful for children with dyslexia. ( )

Adam soon becomes aware that he has Dyslexia and gets help for it. When he receives the aid he needs, it is shown how Adam feels more confident in himself and his reading and writing. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It painted an informative and personal picture of what it is like to deal with Dyslexia and I feel more educated on it. I would definitely read this book with my own students to raise awareness of this disability. ( )
