Primary; Concept; Fiction; This is a great book about animals grouping together and splitting apart. Carle incorporates addition and subtraction and uses small illustrations in the corners of each page to show the math as it happens throughout the story. This would be a great read aloud book or classroom library book for early readers. ( )

In "Rooster's Off to See the World," an ambitious rooster sets off to see the world on a whim. Along the way, many animals decide to join him. However, none of them prepared for the journey. At the end of the night, they are all hungry and missing the comforts of their own. Little by little, the animals all return home. The rooster realizes that it is important to plan and prepare. He also returns home to the comfort of his grain and perch. The amount of animals that join are in number order: 1 rooster, 2 cats, 3 frogs, 4 turtles, and 5 fish. That can reinforce the concepts of counting and sequencing. At the end, I can have students extend the story further by adding 6 of a different species of animals and so on. The story was illustrated with beautiful collage art by Eric Carle. The Scholastic Readability Level of the book is PreK-1st grade. ( )

Rooster wants to see the world and sets off to see it. He gets lonely, so he asks other animals to travel with him: two cats, three frogs, four turtles, and five fish. At moonrise, the group realizes they've left everything they need at home. Each set of animals leaves. The rooster returns to his home perch to dream of traveling.

A corner of the book shows blocks to represent the animals as the count goes up then down. Each set of animals acts in a characteristic way with well-chosen verbs that keep the sentences concise. There are quick references to what's friendly behavior, while none of the animals are aggressive to another; the characterizations are nice.

My child says it's a bad book because the rooster doesn't see the world the way he'd wanted in the beginning. Conversely, I think the book contains excellent lessons that makes what she sees as bad actually very good. (Plan ahead, stay safe, look for friends when you need some, and recognize the differences between dreams and reality.)

Whatever her opinion about the simple adventure, my child does enjoy the number play.

Carle's illustrations are unique and, in places, amusing. (The moon disappeared, too.) ( )
