The suffering of the armies comes through all too clearly. That both sides persisted is remarkable and speaks to just what human beings are capable of enduring. ( ) 2375 Passchendaele: The Tragic Victory of 1917, by Philip Warner (read 4 Apr 1991) This book is not very profound but it tells the awful story--he quotes liberally from the accounts of others. It is over five years since I read Lyn MacDonald's book on this battle and I was horrified anew by this book. It speaks very highly of the British soldier, and not very well of Haig. I was especially intrigued by Warner's last chapter: "Visiting the Battlefield Today." It shows there are guidebooks and tours.
