"The perfect book right now for young readers searching for hope, strength, inspiration -- and just a little horticultural havoc."--New York Times   The first book in a can't-put-it-down, can't-read-it-fast-enough action-thriller trilogy that's part Hatchet, part Alien! The invasion begins--but not as you'd expect. It begins with rain. Rain that carries seeds. Seeds that sprout--overnight, everywhere. These new plants take over crop fields, twine up houses, and burrow below streets. They bloom--and release toxic pollens. They bloom--and form Venus flytrap-like pods that swallow animals and people. They bloom--everywhere, unstoppable. Or are they? Three kids on a remote island seem immune to the toxic plants. Anaya, Petra, Seth. They each have strange allergies--and yet not to these plants. What's their secret? Can they somehow be the key to beating back this invasion? They'd better figure it out fast, because it's starting to rain again....… (més)

Great little bio-horror story. ( )

The book ends with a cliffhanger that sets up book two.
The story follows Anaya, Petra, Seth as they realize they aren't impacted like all other people by the toxic rain and subsequent appearance of black grass and other hazardous plants. The three form a bond as they work together to save the planet, find a way to kill the plants, and embrace the changes happening to their cryptogenic bodies. ( )

The relationship between female characters in this book was obviously written by a man who knows little about preteen and teen female relationships. One girl is jealous because the other girl is pretty so the first is mean to the pretty girl. Then she wonders why the pretty girl treats her badly. One of the girls was allergic to water. That’s just ridiculous. The whole alien abduction thing was also ridiculous. People are either trying to have children or they are not. When women just find themselves pregnant suddenly and they were not trying, there will be suspicions. It won’t be a shocking discovery 16 years later. The author kept creating impossible to survive situations and then made up weird crap and changes in characters’ bodies to have them be heroes. It wasn’t their personalities that made them heroes. It was body changes. Their personalities were lame. There should be a strong personality to go with heroic actions. These kids were more annoying than heroic and definitely stagnant instead of dynamic. ( )

Bloom by Kenneth Oppel is a 2021 Lone Star novel. Y'all are going to love this fairly short, suspenseful novel.

Anaya, Seth, and Petra live in the same town in the Pacific northwest. Friends in the past, Anaya and Petra rarely speak to each other. Their judgemental attitude toward the other is based on who has the most difficulties to overcome. Petra cannot be around water; she is literally allergic to it. If water splashes on her, she develops a rash. Anaya wants to roll her eyes at the way people attempt to protect Petra. She's also the prettiest girl, which annoys Anaya. Anaya has some skin issues and is allergic to pretty much everything. Her food allergies leave her few choices; her nose is constantly running and is red from kleenexes. Seth is new to town and, for the first time, feels this foster family actually cares about him. Most find a way to get rid of him because he's a little different. His drawings have always disturbed his other foster families, making them decide that he needs to move on. Anaya first spots Seth when she needs his picture for the yearbook. When life quickly changes, the three teens find that they are unique. Anaya discovers that she is suddenly pretty when her face clears up and she can breath without help from an inhaler. Petra finds one type of water that doesn't harm her. These three pull together to help save the townspeople.

After a drenching rainstorm, a new plant begins to grow. It's black and invasive. There's not a place it doesn't germinate and take over. Crops can't grow, which means food can't grow. Within days, the plant has taken over the world. Oddly, Anaya, Seth, and Petra find that their lives improve. Everyone is allergic to the plant except them, as they are unaffected by the plant's pollen. Life changes rapidly. Something has to be done or people will die of starvation if they live that long and avoid the plants themselves. As a botanist, Anaya's father races to discover what to do and must travel to a remote island to do research.

Life quickly turns downward, changing to life and death. The entire world works together because they have to. This fast-paced thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. Book 2 is titled Hatch. ( )
