Honor Thy Father, by Gay Talese (19 Aug 1972) This is non-fiction that reads like fiction. It is the story of Bill Bonanno, born 1930, son of Joseph Bonanno, born 1905, one of the dons of the New York Mafia from 1931 to the 1960s. It was written with the full cooperation of Bill Bonanno, and it is an absorbing account, tho it is light on telling about the actual crimes committed. Interesting look at life in a crime family in the 1960s, albeit filtered through its subject, who has reasons to be less than honest. One of the better mafia novels I've read (others I've read so far include "Donnie Brasco," which was on a par with this, and "Goodfellas," which wasn't as interesting. That's probably due mostly to its subjects, who even the author admits are the last dregs of mob culture and not exactly the brightest bulbs in the chandelier. A classic masterwork newly updated The electrifying true story of the rise and fall of New York's notorious Bonanno crime family On New York's Park Avenue on a rainy Tuesday night in October 1964, the famous Mafia chieftain Joseph Bonanno was kidnapped by two mobsters and reported by the police as dead on the following morning. More than a year later, Bonanno mysteriously reappeared, setting off a bloody mob feud that came to be known as the "Banana War." In this monumental work--packed with intimate details and brilliant reporting--bestselling author Gay Talese first brought to the American consciousness a world and a life previously known to only a few. No other book has done more to acquaint readers with the secrets, structure, wars, power plays, family lives, and fascinating, frightening personalities of the Mafia.
