Do either of the main relationships—Lucie Churchill, a biracial Chinese-American, is torn between the brooding George Zao, a Chinese-Australian surfer, and the nouveau riche Cecil Pike, a white-passing Instagram-obsessed socialite—seem at all convincing? Likewise no. Yet Kevin Kwan somehow manages to write books full of outlandish snobbery and vulgar consumption by the uber rich that are also frothily readable—in part because there’s just enough satire in the mix to leaven the determinedly vacuous confection. While Lucie is a bit less bearable a protagonist than in Kwan’s previous books, this is still a perfect book to read on a beach or while travelling: anywhere you’re happy to disengage your brain for a bit while turning on your visual imagination. ( ![]() Do you prefer the finer things in life, or are you more comfortable in pajamas and cuddled on the couch? I find myself to be someone who enjoys cuddled on the couch... Once in awhile I like to get dolled up and do something fancy, but usually not. The characters (and they ARE characters) in Kevin Kwan's Sex and Vanity are mostly among those who prefer a lavish lifestyle. In fact, I'm glad I listened to the audiobook as there were many words I wouldn't have been able to pronounce! However, the main character, Lucie, prefers things a bit more toned down, but is smack dab in the middle of a life of grandeur. The story opens on the lavish wedding of a childhood friend and the escapades that happen during that wild week in Capri. Then, moves to a few years later and her engagement with Cecil. Finally, there is a happy ending, but I won't tell you exactly what that is... I loved listening to this book - the characters kept me laughing and I loved Lucie's realistic views of the world. The narrator was excellent - able to capture the accents and pronounce every bit with perfection! Thank you to Penguin Random House for allowing me to listen to this and offer my honest opinion! Not a false note in this lovely book about love and class and expectations. Although "Sex and Vanity" was funny, it had a different tone than previous Kevin Kwan novels. He writes around family and race, but this is one more serious. I could feel Lucie's pressure to conform to what she thought her grandmother and mother wanted for her life. Sometimes what you think your family wants from you isn't what they want. And, sometimes what they want for you isn't good for you. I enjoyed "Sex and Vanity." I hope that Kevin Kwan continues to write more books with depth. This really deserves only 2.5 stars. I enjoyed Kevin Kwan’s other books, and this novel had some endearing aspects. However, much of the story was simply too over-the-top ridiculous. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
A GOOD MORNING AMERICA Book Club Pick! "Kevin Kwan's new book is his most decadent yet." --Entertainment Weekly The iconic author of the bestselling phenomenon Crazy Rich Asians returns with the glittering tale of a young woman who finds herself torn between two men: the WASPY fiancé of her family's dreams and George Zao, the man she is desperately trying to avoid falling in love with. On her very first morning on the jewel-like island of Capri, Lucie Churchill sets eyes on George Zao and she instantly can't stand him. She can't stand it when he gallantly offers to trade hotel rooms with her so that she can have a view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, she can't stand that he knows more about Casa Malaparte than she does, and she really can't stand it when he kisses her in the darkness of the ancient ruins of a Roman villa and they are caught by her snobbish, disapproving cousin Charlotte. "Your mother is Chinese so it's no surprise you'd be attracted to someone like him," Charlotte teases. The daughter of an American-born Chinese mother and a blue-blooded New York father, Lucie has always sublimated the Asian side of herself in favor of the white side, and she adamantly denies having feelings for George. But several years later, when George unexpectedly appears in East Hampton, where Lucie is weekending with her new fiancé, Lucie finds herself drawn to George again. Soon, Lucie is spinning a web of deceit that involves her family, her fiancé, the co-op board of her Fifth Avenue apartment building, and ultimately herself as she tries mightily to deny George entry into her world--and her heart. Moving between summer playgrounds of privilege, peppered with decadent food and extravagant fashion, Sex and Vanity is a truly modern love story, a daring homage to A Room with a View, and a brilliantly funny comedy of manners set between two cultures.
