Fiction. Literature. Romance. Historical Fiction. Created by a shrewd countess, The Widow's Grace is a secret society with a mission: to help ill-treated widows regain their status, their families, and even find true love again-or perhaps for the very first time . . . When headstrong West Indian heiress Patience Jordan questioned her English husband's mysterious suicide, she lost everything: her newborn son, Lionel, her fortune-and her freedom. Falsely imprisoned, she risks her life to be near her child-until The Widow's Grace gets her hired as her own son's nanny. But working for his unsuspecting new guardian, Busick Strathmore, Duke of Repington, has perils of its own. Especially when Patience discovers his military strictness belies an ex-rake of unswerving honor-and unexpected passion . . . A wounded military hero, Busick is determined to resolve his dead cousin's dangerous financial dealings for Lionel's sake. But his investigation is a minor skirmish compared to dealing with the forthright, courageous, and alluring Patience. Somehow, she's breaking his rules, and sweeping past his defenses. Soon, between formidable enemies and obstacles, they form a fragile trust-but will it be enough to save the future they long to dare together?… (més)

From page 7:

"On the count of three, I'd grab the fat tree trunk.
One.
Two.
Two and a half.
Two and a third.
Three. I started and clung to the vine..."

HOLD UP. DOES THIS AUTHOR THINK 2 AND 1/3 COMES *AFTER* 2 AND 1/2?! I THOUGHT THIS AUTHOR HAD A PHD IN ENGINEERING FROM STANFORD.

I apologize for the all-caps, but I can't even.

Am I so petty that I couldn't get over this one small mistake? Yes. Yes, I am. It makes me think no one who worked on this book understands simple fractions. ( )

1.5 star rounded to 2.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but I wanted to read it after seeing some others interested in reading it. I can't say it was as good as I expected and there was a lot of comments/suggestions that make me gag so not really something I'd recommend.

It was also not as strong of a story as it could have been, I found the writing style to be good but it skipped at points.

Content: mentions of false gods, sexual suggestions/mentions/intentions, gambling, and more. ( )

This romance was a delight to read - the kind of light, enjoyable novel makes it easier to get through a cold, dreary winter day. Patience is a widow, heiress, young mother, and woman of color, which is more than enough to balance before she's separated from her infant son and thrown into Bedlam. The novel opens just as Patience is sneaking back into her former home to breastfeed her son, and makes for an interesting encounter with a certain duke, who's just arrived to kick out the current occupants and take custody of his new ward. The two are clearly attracted to each other and continue to have delightful awkward encounters until they finally realize they're meant to be together. A fun read overall and a definitely something Bridgerton fans would enjoy. ( )

I like the concept behind the story, the idea. I liked how we had this non-white heroine in a historical romance. I liked how the hero was a wounded warrior and her had his leg amputated. I like how the book featured people we don’t normally see in historical romances. I did not love the actual execution of the story, however. But I am grateful that something like this exists and I would love to see more of it in the future ( )

As a white reader used to reading a white-only world of regency novels, I deeply approve of the increase in multicultural heros and heroines in regency romances these days. In this case, the main character is the daughter of a West Indian planter dealing with being a newly widowed single mother. Her son's guardian is recently ex-military as a result of losing a limb, and dealing with that as well as the loss of perceived worth that his job had given him. Not a fluffy little romance! But very good and not artificially deep--the characters were dealing with real problems that made their lives complicated, and learning to live with the changes that these things required.
