From author Rachel McMillan comes a richly researched historical romance that takes place in post-World War II London and features a strong female lead. Brent Somerville, professor of theology at King's College, hopes aiding his wife with her church consultations will help him better understand why she disappeared when he needed her most. I would do four or five stars however there was no faith content outside of a character knowing the Bible well because he is a theology professor. And, there were mentions of lovemaking... Kinda a little kissy.

"The London Restoration" is my first book from Rachel McMillan, and I am quite pleased with how it turned out, the historical facts were woven in such a way that you could see the scenes as they happened in the book. I have not read many books that take place right after War World Two with flashbacks to during the war, and I found that I want to read more books in this era... It just pulled me in so deeply.

I at first read this for the cover alone and now I want a copy for the story ... It was so good!

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher/review company. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

It is the autumn of 1945. Brent Somerville has returned to London to resume teaching theology at King’s College after serving in Belgium and Italy by helping the injured, hoisting stretchers after retrieving them from the battlefields and trenches. He has returned after recuperating from injuries in a foreign hospital with visible scars and PTSD. Prior to the war Brent’s wife, Diana Foyle Somerville was a student of architectural history and has not yet returned to London as she traveled to Vienna to “do a favor for a friend.” Husband and wife for only a short time before Brent went off to war. Now both have secrets from one another. What will become of their love for one another? Can a love story that began before the war endure?

Romance, architecture, theology, PTSD, secrets, the aftermath of war’s destruction, and post-war Soviet threats are all within this beautifully written novel. Historical fiction with atmospheric writing that makes senses tingle. I was engrossed in feeling as though I was viewing the remains of bombed churches and wishing to hear the church bells ring in splendor as they did before the war and riveted in feeling there were goosebumps on my arms from the suspense in the darkness of night and not knowing if good will prevail over evil. It simply isn’t possible for me to separate reading this book and not think about the ongoing war in Ukraine.

I highly recommend this novel with Brent Somerville based on the author’s grandfather’s service with the Royal Canadian Army, 24th Field Ambulance, 5th Armored Division. It shares a glimpse of the myriad of emotions as individuals returned from their service during the war and viewed the devastation in their city of London that is home. I also highly recommend the novel to anyone that has visited London and seen the splendor of the churches and admired the architecture of the churches or is planning an upcoming visit to enjoy the plethora of information particularly of the churches constructed with the architectural design by Christopher Wren. Enjoying this information within the novel brings history alive and allows one to appreciate the history and splendor of the churches that can’t be captured in a tourism or non-fiction book. ( )

This one left me a bit lost at times. There were so many different places and it left me a bit confused if I put the book down for more than a day before I was able to pick it up again. I found it realistic that both Diana and Brent would face barriers when the war ends, each trying to battle their own secrets and unable to communicate them.

Overall, I liked the book and think it's great for someone with the time to sit down and read it within a few days, maybe on a vacation.

Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this and give my honest opinion. ( )

While I have wanted to get away from reading any more spy books, I did like this one. I have read a lot of WWII books lately, but this one is quite different as it deals more with the aftermath and how the war affected people and places, especially churches. While labeled "Historical Christian Fiction," the book isn't preachy or overly sappy. I'm still not sure what are all seven the Greek words for love. I've only known three and learned a couple more from this book. ( )

More on Chill and read

Architectural Historian Diana Somerville has been a code breaker at Bletchley Park during World War II. There she has met some interesting people that have been working for the government, ones that she would have not met otherwise. Now, in the 1945 London, the war is over and Diana has been requested to do something more for her country. Alas, she cannot speak of it as she is bound by the Official Secrets Act she has signed. This engagement of hers, keeps her from open conversations with her husband Brent, that has now returned from his service. She cannot share this information, unless MI6 allows her to.

Brent Somerville, professor of theology at King’s College, went to world and was met with all its mighty and sorrow. He lost a friend and witness some very difficult situations. Now that he is back, he wants to spend his days with his wife and get over his own trauma. He hopes his aiding with her church consultation will bring them closer and help him understand why she was away for five weeks when he needed her the most.

The two of them start visiting churches looking for what can be repaired and how, while at the same time they have their own agenda. Diana needs to find as much information as she can, with respect to a Russian agent called Eternity, so she can do what she was asked for and get done with it and eventually have more time to devote to her husband. Brent seems so distant some times and she knows that she is partly responsible for that. not letting him in on everything that has happened in her life during the war. Another part is the war itself. Such events, as the World War II was, can change ones life for good. Both of them have been through experiences that have affected them greatly and Brent has been through some that don’t allow him to sleep peacefully. He is afraid he might hurt his beloved wife during one of his nightmares, so he prefers to sleep at the couch instead.

The book synopsis includes all the interesting part about the book, including MI6, Russian spies and covered work at a troublesome time. World War II always has great stories to tell or to inspire. It depends on the point of view. In this case, I felt that the author wanted to focus more on the social impact a war has and how it changes people. The focus point was how people can find each other after four years of separation because of war and come to think that this person that stands in front of them, the one that they fell in love with not that long ago, is something of a stranger. Which is a big truth, if I may say. The spying stuff was their just to spice things up and add to the background of Diana’s change.

Even so, I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narrator did her best to create the atmosphere the author wanted, making it difficult to understand if this was about the restoration of London, or the restoration of Diana’s and Brent’s relationship.

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the opportunity to listen and review this audiobook. ( )
