“𝒀𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒏, ‘𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒅𝒔, 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒃, 𝒗𝒆𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉."

WOW. Just WOW. Can anyone please take me to that world and never let me come back. I wasn't much fan of fantasy books and this one was my first book in this genre. I can't even begin with how much I loved this book.

“𝑶𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒅 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒔𝒕.”

JLA really blew my mind with her writing, engaging characters, and her truly outstanding engrossing story plot.

''𝑭𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒎𝒆.𝑰𝒕 𝒆𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂 𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅."

I devoured each page of this book and really liked the chemistry between Hawke and Poppy. Poppy the fierce, kind, honest, brave, and can fight her wars (in a literal way) with her dagger. How awesome is that !? Hawke is adorably charming who is equally good with swords and killing. Oh, don't get me started with the plot twist. I was just like WHAT!!!. I can't wait to start my next book in this. ( )

This book... oh this book, how you have left me betrayed, dismayed and wondering what the heck happened here??

I am at a loss as to why everyone is raving about this one. Maybe I wasn't in the right headspace. Maybe I wasn't in the demographic... or maybe we read different books entirely. Whatever the case may be, I could not finish this one. I tried, I really did, I even got the audiobook thinking that things might be better in another person's voice. Spoiler alert... it was just as disastrous. The beginning was a big steaming pile of info dumpage. The characters and plot were tropey and not in the "Ahhh, I Love This Homey Feeling, Reliably Delicious Person/Scenario" way. This was such a disappointment I might be off of vampire reads for a long while and I am most definitely off of Mrs. Armentrout.

Overall:
DNF 52%... Nuff said ( )

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Blood and Ash series. I bought this book for Kindle

Story (5/5): This is a long book that doesn’t feel long at all, I breezed right through this. I loved the unique world presented here and the story of a Maiden who is supposed to Ascend but has never been taught exactly what that means. This is tied in with a world that is struggling to survive attacks of Craven in walled cities under a ruling Ascended class.

Characters (5/5): I really enjoyed Poppy as a character. She has taken charge of her own safety by secretly learning how to fight and is under no illusions that her Ascension is going to be a “good” thing. However, she is also aware that she has been very sheltered and respects advice from others. Poppy is pretty kick-butt and I enjoyed her a lot. Hawke was amazing as well. Not only could he seriously kick-butt on his own, he wasn’t over domineering with Poppy. He kind of lets her do what she is capable of doing and pushes her, but also calls on actions that are too rash. The chemistry between these two characters was amazing.

The side characters were incredibly well done too. Many of the guards or people Poppy befriends have a lot of depth and you really care about them. All in all the characters were really, really well done.

Setting (4/5): It takes awhile to completely understand the setting here. At first all you know is that cities are walled because of vicious Craven and other monsters that hunt at night. It is a dark and somewhat hopeless feeling setting and it was very well done. It takes a while for the whole class setting of the Ascended to make sense. I enjoyed the gradual unveiling of this world and enjoyed the world itself. Our view of the world is a bit narrow in this first book (as is Poppy’s) but it was already expanding by the end of the book.

Writing Style (5/5): I absolutely tore through this book because it is so engaging and easy to read. I was a little hesitant to start this rather long book but then I could not put it down. The characters in here are amazing and the action scenes are very well done and easy to follow. The only thing I struggled with a bit at first was the world-building; I liked the world but it wasn’t completely clear what was really going on. Aside from strengthening her world building a bit, Armentrout provided a fun and fast read that I love.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I absolutely loved this book. It has a great fantasy world, plenty of action, and a heart-stopping romance. I breezed through this incredibly quickly. So far I am enjoying this series just as much as the Harbinger series. I also read the first book in her Lux series but wasn’t a huge fan of that book. I wWould recommend this if you are a fan of action packed fantasy with a good dollop of romance in it. ( )

Poppy is the Maiden, chosen to save her people by the gods. Her life is restricted but she manages small rebellions. The time for her Ascension is nearing though she doesn't actually know what that means. Meanwhile, the kingdom is assailed by the Cravens, ghoul-like creatures whose bite means death. Her new guard, Hawke, is mysterious and handsome, but Poppy isn't sure about his charms and what her attraction might mean.
Right off, I'm going to say I had a huge problem with the dialogue. This is a fantasy but Poppy and friends have the vernacular of today's teenagers. Every anachronism threw me out of the story and I had to grit my teeth and try to immerse myself again each time. It's annoying because this is actually a pretty good story with some different takes on paranormal creatures that I found interesting. Poppy is an interesting heroine, mostly meek but often spunky. She has issues but does her best to overcome or ignore them. Hawke is an arrogant alpha hero, but I liked it a lot that Poppy stands up to him.
The world-building is very slow which often left me confused about Poppy's backstory and calls for some patience for the reader. I didn't mind because there are some good twists and nothing is what it seems. This isn't the best book of this type (Anne Bishop rules), but it's still a good story and made me what to see what happens next. ( )
