A survey of the technique of pate-sur-pate and the leading artists involved in the art. The cameo-like effect of the technique was achieved by applying successive layers of the thin slip in delicate gradations and by fine carving with modelling tools, finished off with a brush. Based on original research, the survey includes material from unpublished papers in the Solon family collection, and from the archives of Sevres, Minton and Meissen.
