I bought this book just after having seen Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express and reading And Then There Were None. At the shop I bought it at (The Strand in NY) advertised it as "Agatha Christie's most controversial twist." I think that might have impacted my enjoyment since the entire book felt very slow leading up to the last couple of chapters where the twist is finally laid bare. This is definitely a fine read that, as another reviewer pointed out, may have been the chief inspiration for Knives Out. ( )

Ok, this is definitely the one that Knives Out was most closely based on. It's not a one-to-one correspondence, but - the part that really got me was (spoilers) Aristide's saying the grandson Eustace is too easily swayed by the people around him, and Eustace yelling about hating his grandfather and running out of the room - and the "Nazi child masturbating in the bathroom" line from Knives Out.

Which is totally fine because Knives Out is a great movie and updating Agatha Christie so that all the weird gender role bullshit is well out of it is not a bad idea at all.

I'm re-reading this for the Agatha Christie discussion group that I am leading at U3A.

The story is set in London after World War II. Both Sophia Leonides and Charles Hayward have been overseas during the war.

Among the questions that I want to talk about with my group:

the reliability of the narrator
Agatha Christie's familiarity with poisons
the portrayal of children in this novel
the deception that Aristide Leonides resorted to about his will - was it justified or necessary?
the portrayal of the main characters - can you visualise them?
how realistic or ethical was it of Scotland Yard to involve Charles Hayward in the investigation?
how surprised were you by the ending?
Why was Aristide Leonides murdered?
What does his murder tell you about the murderer?
What was his opinion of the murderer?
Who did you consider might have been the murderer?
What red herrings were there?
Was there anyone you decided could not have committed the murder?
What about the other people who are murdered during the book?

We will follow our discussion up with the viewing of the 2017 film with Glenn Close and Max Irons in it. Do they think this film is a good interpretation of the novel? ( )

I checked this BBC Adaptation of from my library because I was in a hurry and it said "unabridged", but it has to be abridged somehow. It was only 1 hour and 45 minutes long? It's a full cast dramatisation though, and perhaps that allowed it to tell the full story without all the descriptive text and 'he said' stuff.

Either way, it was an excellent production, although it's obviously meant to be seen as well as heard, so some of the sound effects didn't work as well as they could have (the 'love' scenes just sounded... damp). I thoroughly enjoyed the production once I got used to the format. But I will read this book in print at some point; I want to know if I've missed any subtleties that Christie is famous for.

The story is one of my favorites so far - definitely darker than her usual, but not as bad as I feared at all. I admit I guessed the murderer, but only because I suspect the actor played the part too well. Something was said midway - I can't even remember what - and I thought, it's probably 'x'. I was never sure, and Christie almost let me astray at one point, but the reveal wasn't the shocking twist it might have been. It didn't diminish my enjoyment in the least.

I have one other of these dramatisations checked out for Murder on the Links and I'm going to go ahead and listen to it (I think golf is boring, so I need the drama), but after that I'll take the time to hunt down the full, true audiobooks of Christie's work; at least for the first read. ( )
