A Stitch in Time by Kelley Armstrong

A time-slip mystery. First in the series.
Bronwyn has inherited an old house she remembers having a ghost when she visited as a young girl. They were friends and playmates. Now that she has returned to Thorne Manor she finds she still has the ability to slip through time and interact with William in his time. They are the same age and resume their friendship which turns into more.
More than one ghost inhabits Thorne Manor and not all are friendly. When a mysterious disappearance becomes the village legend with William as the villain, Bronwyn starts to listen closer to the ghosts that continue to vie for her attention.

Tense until the very end. Is he the hero or a victim?
Gripping and thrilling. With a romance between the centuries that you can’t help be sad about the span of time and ultimate ending.
Reminded me a bit of the old movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve.

I alternated between the ebook and audiobook. The audio is narrated by Samantha Brentmoor who I loved for her tone, emotional portrayal and timing.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share. ( )

time-travel, romantic, historical-fiction, historical-research, mystery, situational-humor, supernatural, suspense, no-gratuitous-erotica*****

An old Victorian mansion in the North Yorkshire moors is in the late eighteenth century as well as the present time, as are select people like widowed Bronwyn and William who have known each other since childhood but with a twenty three year gap. There are apparent ghosts, mysteries, suspense, and more. Of course I loved the story, but what was best was the clarity of the imagery and the way the characters are so real to me. This story is so well crafted that, as the reader, I felt totally involved and a part of it all.
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Subterranean Press via NetGalley. Thank you! ( )

Series Info/Source: I got an eGalley of this book to review through This is the first book in A Stitch in Time series by Armstrong. The book stands alone well. I have been a huge fan of all of Armstrong’s books except her Women of the Otherworld series. This is Armstrong’s first foray into gothic romance.

Story (4/5): Bronwyn used to spend time with a boy named William at Thorne Manor, but after a tragic incident, she was convinced that he wasn’t real. Now Bronwyn has inherited Thorne Manor many years later and is trying to recover from the death of her husband. When she gets to Thorne Manor she thinks maybe it is haunted but then she starts to slip back in time again to William’s time. William is still there, a grown man, and upset that Bronwyn broke her promise to return. Aside from trying to sort out her issues with William, Bronwyn is being haunted by increasingly violent ghosts who seem determined to have Brownyn figure out the mystery behind their grisly deaths.

I enjoyed this a lot. I am normally not a huge fan of “time travel” stories. However, this is more of a time slip in a certain area that the characters can go in and out of. I liked the super spooky mystery of the ghosts that haunt Bronwyn in her time. I also enjoyed how this mystery was entwined with William’s past. There is some pretty steamy romance in here too, and it is nicely blended in with the rest of the story.

Characters (4/5): I enjoyed both Bronwyn and William. Bronwyn comes across as an interesting character and I liked reading a book with an older (upper 30’s) main protagonist. I did feel like she could have used a bit more personality, she just seemed a little washed-out at points. William is also an interesting character but I felt like he was just too defined by his time with Bronwyn, aside from his interest in horses there wasn’t a lot to make him interesting to me. Still, the two have good chemistry and were fine to read about. Some of the side characters were even more interesting.

Setting (4/5): I liked the sleepy small town setting of Thorne Manor and the creepy bog that surrounds it. It was well done. Jumping between current time and past time was also fun. In general it was a good setting and I enjoyed it. I am eager to see how the time slips are expanded upon in future books in this series.

Writing Style (5/5): I always love Armstrong’s writing style. It’s effortless to read and she does an excellent job blending story elements together. This story had a wonderful blend of mystery, thriller, fantasy/sci-fi, and romance. It was an intriguing premise that was well done and I am curious to see where the story goes. This story is, at heart, a romance but also has an excellent and super creepy mystery as well as some interesting time travel elements.

My Summary (4/5): Overall I enjoyed this. It wasn’t my favorite book by Armstrong but it is intriguing and shows a lot of promise. I felt like the characters were a bit lacking but really enjoyed how the mysteries of Thorne House were blended in with these time slips and Bronwyn’s romance with William. I feel like this series has a lot of potential and is unique. I plan on reading future books in this series. I would recommend to those who think a blend of creepy ghost story, time travel, and romance sound fun. ( )

38-year-old Bronwyn Dale, a history professor at the University of Toronto, has just inherited her aunt and uncle’s home, Thorne Manor in the English moors in Yorkshire. She used to spend her summers there, but hasn’t been back since she was 15 and her Uncle Stan died under traumatic circumstances. She fled the house screaming about ghosts and her mother put her under psychiatric care.

Now her mother is gone, as is her husband Michael, having died eight years earlier of brain cancer. She is on her summer break from teaching, and thus is free to return to Thorne Manor. Immediately she not only encounters some persistent ghosts, but reconnects with her secret boyfriend, William Thorne. The only catch is that William lived two centuries in the past; Bronwyn is able, somehow, when she is in her bedroom in the house, to slip through a stitch in time.

Bronwyn is immediately attracted again to William, who, however, is at first hurt and angry she had been away so long, and then frightened she will leave again. The plot heats up in several ways, as they rekindle their relationship and when resolving the mysteries of the ghosts and their connection to the two of them becomes inevitable.

Evaluation: This story got better as it moved along. At first, I didn’t feel I “knew” the characters enough even though we were plunged into a hot sex-studded romance, but as Armstrong developed the story about Thorne Manor and its hidden secrets, it got much more interesting to me. By the end, I was fully invested and even wishing for a sequel. ( )
