Ray Bradbury's moving recollection of a vanished golden era remains one of his most enchanting novels. Dandelion Wine stands out in the Bradbury literary canon as the author's most deeply personal work, a semi-autobiographical recollection of a magical small-town summer in 1928.Twelve-year-old Douglas Spaulding knows Green Town, Illinois, is as vast and deep as the whole wide world that lies beyond the city limits. It is a pair of brand-new tennis shoes, the first harvest of dandelions for Grandfather's renowned intoxicant, the distant clang of the trolley's bell on a hazy afternoon, It is yesteryear and tomorrow blended into an unforgettable always. But as young Douglas is about to discover, summer can be more than the repetition of established rituals whose mystical power holds time at bay. It can be a best friend moving away, a human time machine who can transport you back to the Civil War, or a sideshow automaton able to glimpse the bittersweet future.Come and savor Bradbury's priceless distillation of all that is eternal about boyhood and summer.… (més)

Starts SO beautifully - and the Dandelion Wine and the Summer Days! - then ends so horribly... ( )

All of the Ray Bradbury books I've read previously have been solidly set in the Halloween season with their odd families in odder houses, magical carousels, and storytelling trees, but Dandelion Wine jumps us back into the heady days of summer. We all know how much I hate the heat, but Bradbury's pastiche story of small town summers and the magical freedom within is absolutely perfect. Like summer itself, the story is less a narrative that begins and ends, but is more a loosely tied collection of adventures, moments, and bittersweet memories half remembered. We follow two brothers from their first waking the town up at the start of the season and see the summer's events throughout the town, to the first crisp feeling of Autumn around the corner - and their excitement to get there as well. As we get older summer seasons seem to take less of an effect, as we don't get to escape our jobs as the boys escape school foe two glorious months, but somehow the summer still sends us a sense of rejuvenation (heat notwithstanding if you're me). Bradbury's novel perfectly captures this sense of nostalgia, even if our own summer happened well after the 1920s that he sets his story in, and thus it would be impossible I feel not to get at least a small sense of delight from this novel. Though I will caution readers that it is best to read during late Spring/early Summer, as I tried to initially read this book when it was far too chilly out and had a dismal time of it! ( )

Closer to a 4.5, but I enjoyed reading it enough that I'll give it a 5. I think the different stories here are kind of smoke and mirrors for the same thing over and over again, but Bradbury's writing is charming enough that I'm willing to give it a pass. ( )

Hmmm...a bit melodramatic, a bit predictable. I enjoyed the thoughts and ideas in the story. I liked many of the stories in the book the book but it was sort of a word jungle. A lot of people said that it was very poetic so I think I expected more. Compared to most modern day bestsellers, Bradbury's wordiness is much more poetic and even more beautiful than a lot of works but I feel like others have been able say a lot less and evoke a lot more. "Gardening is the handiest excuse for being a philosopher. Nobody guesses, nobody accuses, nobody knows, but there you are, Plato in the peonies....Dig in the earth, delve in the soul. Spring those mower blades and walk in the spray of the Fountain of Youth."
"Dawn, then, was a time where things changed element for element. Air ran like hot spring water howhere, with no sound. The lake was a quantity of steam very still and deep over valleys of fish and sand held baking under its serene vaports. Tar was poured licorise in the streets...."
Douglas's mouth was slightly open and from his lips and from the thin vents of his nostrils, gently there rose a scent of cool night and cool water and cool white snow and cool green moss, and cool moonlight on silver pebbles lying at the bottom of a quiet river and cool clear water at the bottom of a small white stone well.
.It was like holding their heads down for a brief moment to the purse of an apple-scented fountain flowing cool up into the air and washing their faces....They could not move for a long time."
