This book is about Polly as she described how her family was forced to move from their land in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In exchange for the government buying their land, they are given a modern home with inside taps and electrical lights. Although their home is nice, they miss the mountains. A story about a little girl living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in the 1920's right after the government a section of land for a national park. She lives in a hallow where her mother makes jam and her father makes baskets that they sell at the store over the mountain and they find magic in the call of the whippoorwill. Then everything changes when their land is sold and they move down the mountain where everything is different. One day they return to the mountain and find that sometimes change brings good change but some things - like that of the call of the whippoorwill - stay the same. ( )
