A wonderful, engaging memoir by an actress who got her start at MTV and moved on to One Tree Hill, and television movies. Hilarie is a great writer and chooses precise words to describe the good, the bad, and the ugly in her life with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, her farm, her abuse at the hands of power types, and her community work in the small town of Rhinebeck, NY.
I loved reading this book!
One of the best things are the little pieces she inserts among the chapters - about family recipes, gardening hints, and the qualities of different manures.
Laughed out loud when she wrote "Manure Sommelier"! ( )

Some of my favorite celebrity memoirs seemed to be filled with raucous stories of sex, drugs and rock & roll (Elton John's "Me" and Patti Smith's "Just Kids"). The Rural Diaries doesn't have any of that. Instead it's filled with love, sweetness, vulnerability, joy, sorrow, community, and friends that become family. It's because of all of those things that makes this book and Hilarie Burton so incredibly relatable and touching. I had tears in my eyes no less than three times while reading this book. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but I think it takes a village to nurture and support an adult as well.

Reading how Hilarie took and continues to take such an active role in renovating multiple rustic houses, maintaining a farm, taking care of animals, it makes me want to rediscover my bad-a$$ babe side. Get sweaty, get dirty, feel proud and succcessful - that's the Hollywood dream, right?! This Hollywood ending is brought to you by piles of manure, alpacas, donkeys, plaid shirts, and boot. "Clearly, anything is possible at Mischief Farm." ( )

OMG! I can't remember when I have enjoyed a book more and so sad that I've finished it. I watched this woman entertain my daughter when she was in high school and I would stay up to see what OTH was all about, finding it a bit like 90210, I watched as a teen. Needless to say I still keep up with her and Sophia Bush and can't believe what wonderful woman they have become! Bless them and their families and JDM too of course. Write more Hilarie and I'll first in line to watch or read anything you do! ( )

"The Rural Diaries" recounts how an actress re-imagined her life to become a mother and also to manage and live on a small farm along with her actor husband. The author takes readers on a roller coaster ride of advice, memoir, and life changes. She writes with humor and honesty, and the book contains some laugh out loud sections. Readers should be aware of the use of profanity throughout.

I received this book from NetGalley and from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own. ( )

If you're doing the Read Harder Challenge for 2020 this will qualify for the entry about a rural setting. I used it as my entry for that task.

So, the cover and the name caught my eye and I found the memoir aspect interesting. I didn't know who she was - I wasn't watching MTV when she was hosting Total Request Live. But at the mention of an incident of unwanted sexual contact on the set of the show, I recalled seeing her tweet about it. I am aware of her husband's existence but I never think of him by his name. It's his character's name on The Walking Dead that makes me cringe and wonder how people can be awful to one another.

Hilarie Burton Morgan's book feels very authentic. It's not a tell-all and she goes just enough into each story that you get the details of what happened without going so deep that the woman, her family, and her neighbors don't have any privacy.

She's about to move to Paris, France when she meets a man 16 years her senior who she jokes is a midlife crisis. She ends up charmed and a new plan develops which involves a future Christmas tree farm. Stories about rural life, infertility, gender bias, coupledom, and being a good community member is what you'll find in this book.

It was really very sweet and it's obvious how much she cares for the animals that she's been entrusted with to care for. ( )
