This is part of a series published by the national park service about American history. Members of the series are short paperpacks with nice full-color reproductions of notable art and other objects within the collection of the park system.

This particular volume covers the US' westward expansion during the period from 1803-1879. As to be expected its pretty light on the conflict between the US/European explorers and settlers and the Natives who were already in the area. That said, its a nice overview of the overall period, and certainly has given me the first over-all and comprehensive view of the various expeditions (both formal and informal) and how "western" knowledge of the continent grew over-time. A good read, and a good launch point to go looking for more information.

About the time that Americans were waging war with Mexico, talking of Manifest Destiny, and heading for Oregon and Utah, the New England author and naturalist Henry David Thoreay penned these words: "Eastward I go only by force; but westward I go free . . . I should not lay so much stress on this fact, if I did not believe that something like this is the prevailing tendency of my countrymen. I must walk toward Oregon, and not toward Europe."
