A satirical fantasy about banks and money with a criminal in charge. But then the city of Ankh-Morpok is run by an assassin. I liked this book and it actually made me think a lot about why money works the way it does. I didnt like it as much as Going Postal but it was still good and I love the main characters. MvL takes on the stock market... in an appropriately confounding tale including a turnip, secretaries in love with their bosses, a chef allergic to g____c, and lamb's head stew complete with head (and sunglasses). I was not very fond of one running joke (pun unavoidable). For various reasons, including that and the fact that my reading life is out of control, this will probably be the last Terry Pratchett I read for a while. Here's wishing that Moist had taken on Taxes.
For all the economic theory in play here, Pratchett makes everything look easy - you get the sense that he's one of the smartest people writing fantasy out there, but he just doesn't feel like showing it off. He is always unbelievably fluid in his prose and the comic aphorisms that seem to flow out of him. Every once in a while he cues his punchlines too noticeably, with an "after all," or an "oh all right then." But it's hard to complain - he also uses the word "hopefully" correctly. Also: "charivari." When Pratchett is at his best, he matches the greatest satirists in piercing the veil of shared illusion. In a time when money's absurdities puzzle even those who purport to possess it, we need him to do better. Pertany a aquestes sèriesPertany a aquestes col·leccions editorials
It's an offer you can't refuse. Who would not to wish to be the man in charge of Ankh-Morpork's Royal Mint and the bank next door? It's a job for life. But, as former con-man Moist von Lipwig is learning, the life is not necessarily for long. The Chief Cashier is almost certainly a vampire. There's something nameless in the cellar (and the cellar itself is pretty nameless), it turns out that the Royal Mintruns at a loss. A 300 year old wizard is after his girlfriend, he's about to be exposed as a fraud, but the Assassins Guild might get him first. In fact lot of people want him dead Oh. And every day he has to take the Chairman for walkies. Everywhere he looks he's making enemies. What he should be doing is ...Making Money! No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
