Well-written (though occasionally it overdoes it) story of a Montreal homicide detective investigating the fatal fall of a call girl from a penthouse apartment terrace. The book effectively alternates chapters between the detective's investigation and flashbacks that follow the girl in the time leading up to her death. The ending is so potentially confusing that the publishers of this paperback edition had to add a postscript explaining the meaning of it all. A worthwhile read, nevertheless, as it does a pretty good job of portraying a seamy business with a dark side that may be darker than you think! Published in 1959, this was made into a movie in 1973 with Karen Black as the call girl and Christopher Plummer as the detective. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

When heroin-addicted call girl Elizabeth Lucy dies in a fall from a swanky penthouse terrace, homicide detective Henderson is assigned to the case. Was it murder? Suicide? Through his investigation, Henderson uncovers a frightening underworld that is far more dark and dangerous than those of prostitution and the drug trade. But more than anything, this is Elizabeth's story. Told through flashbacks and those who knew her, a life unfolds that ends with a struggle unlike any other. A masterful debut, The Pyx has earned considerable praise in Canada and abroad. It served as the basis of the feature film of the same name starring Karen Black and Christopher Plummer. The Pyx was first published by in 1959 and for three decades has enjoyed numerous translations and editions before going out of print in the early '90s. This Ricochet Books edition marks the first in a quarter-century. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |

Elizabeth Lucy, a beautiful prostitute, dies after falling from the ledge of a high-rise penthouse in Montreal during the late 1950s. Did she commit suicide? Was she murdered? Henderson, a sharp but weary veteran cop, is assigned to the case. As his investigation unfolds, people with knowledge of Elizabeth's mysterious demise begin to turn up dead, and Henderson realizes that the case he's working is anything but routine. Simply yet ingeniously constructed, The Pyx is an unforgettable book. (Harvey Hart's 1973 film adaptation, starring Karen Black and Christopher Plummer, is almost as good.) ( )
