"A big, blowzy romp through the rainbow eccentricities of three generations of crazy bayou debutantes." --Atlanta Journal-Constitution "A very entertaining and, ultimately, deeply moving novel about the complex bonds between mother and daughter." --Washington Post "Mary McCarthy, Anne Rivers Siddons, and a host of others have portrayed the power and value of female friendships, but no one has done it with more grace, charm, talent, and power than Rebecca Wells." --Richmond Times-Dispatch The incomparable #1 New York Times bestseller--a book that reigned at the top of the list for an remarkable sixty-eight weeks--Rebecca Wells's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is a classic of Southern women's fiction to be read and reread over and over again. A poignant, funny, outrageous, and wise novel about a lifetime friendship between four Southern women, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood brilliantly explores the bonds of female friendship, the often-rocky relationship between mothers and daughters, and the healing power of humor and love, in a story as fresh and uplifting as when it was first published a decade and a half ago. If you haven't yet met the Ya-Yas, what are you waiting for?… (més)

"My mother is not the Holy Lady, she thought. My mother's love is not perfect. My mother's love is good enough. My lover's love is good enough. Maybe I am good enough."

Such an awesome read! I do wished I have such a colourful young life LOL!

I loved how descriptive Rebecca Wells is in her writing and it was funny and interesting to see the world of Louisiana (or how some parts of it can be). I don't usually like realistic fiction all that much, but this was a good book to listen to on my long car rides to and from work because the plot was interesting and thankfully, the reader did a wonderful keeping my attention with the different voices and vocal expressions. We are not born all at once, but by bits. The body first, and the spirit later...Our mothers are racked with the pains of our physical birth; we ourselves suffer the longer pains of our spiritual growth.
--Mary Antin

Forgiveness is the name of love practiced among people who love poorly. The hard truth is that all of us love poorly. We need to forgive and be forgiven every day, every hour--unceasingly. That is the great work of love among the fellowship of the weak that is the human family.
--Henri Nouwen

Penetrating so many secrets, we cease to believe in the unknowable. But there it sits, nevertheless, calmly licking its chops.
--H. L. Mencken

Piney pitch is the secret to starting a fire. Unless you have kerosene, of course.
I believe that God doesn’t give you more than one little piece of the story at once. You know, the story of your life. Otherwise your heart would crack wider than you could handle. He only cracks it enough so you can still walk, like someone wearing a cast. But you’ve still got a crack running up your side, big enough for a sapling to grow out of. Only no one sees it. Nobody sees it. Everybody thinks you’re one whole piece, and so they treat you maybe not so gentle as they would if they could see that crack.
