I received a copy for an honest opinion. I had high hopes that this twist on a classic would be a great novel. However, I was sorely disappointed in that it starts so bland and gets worse as you go along with fragments of sentences that becomes extremely annoying. I felt no connection with any of the characters and feel that maybe classics should just be left alone. ( )

Gregory Maguire is a gifted raconteur with a particular talent for reinterpreting fairy tales for a modern audience. His novels have, in turn, spawned their own retellings and adaptations (see Wicked). Maguire's latest novel, A Wild Winter Swan, takes the classic Hans Christian Andersen story of "The Wild Swans," and reimagines it in 1960s New York. Here, Maguire beautifully blends the wonder of a cursed swan prince with the grit and grime of the city to create a moving story filled with magical realism. Many thanks to William Morrow for an advance reading copy of this book. A Wild Winter Swan is currently available in bookstores. ( )

I'll confess, at the start: I'm a huge Gregory Maguire fan, having loved his work since Wicked. His singular talent, I believe, is approaching fairy tales from an entirely new perspective, one colored by modern sensibilities, to be sure, but that kind of loving retelling is an essential part of the lives of all fairy tales. This take on Anderson's "The Wild Swans," set at Christmastime in 1960's New York, is another Maguire success. His descriptions of the Laura, the main character, her immigrant Italian grandparents, and the world they inhabit is spot-on; details like the brand of bubble bath she uses bring the reader fully into the story. If I had one complaint, it would be that we learn next to nothing about the swan boy; I'd have liked to have more scenes where he and Laura learn more about one another's world (although their parting scene is just exquisitely beautiful). For fans of fairy tales and fairy tale retellings alike, A Wild Winter Swan is a delight. ( )

When a book is compared to great classics you are setting a very high bar from the start. The reader is expecting to be blown away and rightly should be. However, when you failure miserable at meeting that high standard, the reader is terribly disappointed. This is exactly what happened to me.
There are two main reasons I didn’t enjoy this story. First is Laura. She was very whiny. I get that her parents are no longer in the picture and she is very resentful of having to live with her grandparents whom she finds very dull. She is also not happy in school and does not have any friends. All a recipe for feeling sorry for yourself. I get that. What I have issue with is that the whininess bled over into all the aspects of the book and it became boring after the first forty pages.
Secondly, there was not much going on with the plot. It was so slow. You have to read to about the halfway point before anything happens of interest. Then the author packs everything into the latter part of the book. As it stands, I think this would have been better as a novella.
I received a free copy, from the publisher, via LibraryThing’s early reviewer program. For more of my reviews, and author interviews, see my blog at ( )
