teen/adult fiction suspense/adventure with monsters, (very) marginal queer interest. (Audio narrated by dancer/actress/artist/sewist Jasika Nicole @jasikatrycurious)

I only picked this up because I found out Jasika was narrating it (she does a great job on it, differentiating between the three main narrators' and the other characters' voices!), but it's a fun family-of-monsters story that gets deliciously complicated. ( )

Imagine a book taking such a strong hold on you that you end up dreaming about it. That's exactly what happened to me tonight.
This story felt like waltzing inside a museum and then being beaten up with its beautiful paintings.

All in all, wonderful experience, definitely another favourite of the year. ( )

Aside from some assumptions based on the cover, I wasn't sure what to expect coming into this - so I was definitely surprised (because I had formed the wrong assumption about the main character based on the cover).

This book has:
- an inventive magical system
- weird family dynamics
- a totally weird but unique fairy tale vibe
- dark atmosphere, creepy house - the author does an incredible job of setting mood

I'm struggling, honestly, to review the book because it was kind of a mass of contradictions. It's a slow burn of a story and in the beginning, I wasn't really sure what was going on or who these characters were, but Szabo dangles just enough to keep me turning pages. It sort of slowed down just about the point where things were finally being explained (around the 2/3 mark) but then it zooms to the ending.

There's a LOT of ambiguity in this book, be it the magic, some of the characters (I'm not sure what Mom is, but she's sitting in a tub of water all the time), and some things come up but are never fully explained.

I also didn't necessarily like most of the characters but I wanted to see where Eleanor would go in the story, and that kept me reading too.

Really, I think Szabo exercised some sort of fairy tale magic on me, because this has a lot of elements that should infuriate or frustrate but instead all add to the "otherness" of the story. This is perfect for fans of Rory Power and Gothic fiction ( )

When I read the synopsis for What Big Teeth by Rose Szabo, I was so excited! I love werewolf stories, and the idea of coming home from boarding school to a strange family sounds like a great plot to me. The opening chapters of the book were intriguing and made me want to know more. Here is an excerpt from Chapter One, after Eleanor arrives home and sees her family for the first time in a long time:

“What’s for dinner?” Father asked Rhys. “Show me what you
caught.”
Rhys grabbed the sack and pulled out a brace of young rabbits by the ears. Their heads lolled limply from their broken
necks. Their white throats were pink with blood.
Maybe my eyes were adjusting, I thought, since everything
seemed to be getting darker around me. And then I fainted.

Such a horrifying scene! After I read the first chapter, I was pumped and ready to go wherever this story would take me. Unfortunately, it didn't really take anywhere. I soon lost interest, and I felt like nothing was happening. It's true that the family members say strange things and do strange things, but it's not very exciting. There was some love drama, a new villain was introduced, a character's secret is revealed, and Eleanor explores her powers. However, the plot didn't really maintain my interest. At the climax of the book, I was thinking, "That's it?" The book is marketed as "horror" and "thrilling," but I really didn't get that sense from the book. Overall, What Big Teeth is a tame, YA fantasy with gothic undertones. It wasn't the werewolf story I was expecting, but I'm sure some readers of YA fantasy will appreciate its uniqueness. ( )

"What Big Teeth" is a well written book that fells like a horror story. The main character, Eleanor, would describe it that way. Eleanor, who previously attended boarding school for years, returns home to her very strange family that has basically ignored her all these years. Things fall apart after her grandmother dies and the reader is taken down a road of horrifying twists and turns. A great debut novel and I look forward to book #2 from Rose Szabo! ( )
