The Jensen family: They are a close family not just the nucleus but the ever-growing members too. Time apart doesn’t seem to dim their love, care or willingness to come to each other’s aid whenever the need arises. In this third installment of the series, the story centers around Denise the daughter of Smoke and Sally Jensen. Her twin brother Louis got married and went to Harvard law school in the second book, Too Soon to Die. The twins return to the Sugarloaf ranch starts in the first book titled, The Jensen Brand.
Readers will enjoy not just the Jensen family, but also the use of flashback to get glimpses into Denny and her past. The tension in the novel starts with gun play while Denny, also known as Denise, is on the train platform reminiscing about her brother’s departure to law school a couple of weeks prior. While reminiscing she has her past suddenly catch up to her right there in the town of Big Rock.
During the story we learn a lot about Denny and her time in Europe with her brother, as well as what makes the lady tick. We see how almost lifelike Denny is as we venture into her broken heart, past choices, and see how that has made her a formidable woman. There are moments in the book where I easily got caught up with the tale and couldn’t wait to read how the past would be resolved.
Along with what was happening to Denny, there were other subplots going on with characters like Brice Rodgers whom readers will be familiar with if they read the prior two novels in the series. There are also a couple of men after the nefarious Count in the book, and it was fun to read how they were all going to meet and long held scores settled up!
I cannot wait for audiences everywhere to sit down and enjoy the latest western action-packed tale that flowed from the Johnstone pen. Trust me when I say that readers won’t be sorry to open the book and get lost for a while in the pages of the Old West with a very familiar family in the fictional Johnstone realm, the Jensens. If you haven’t read any Johnstone book, you’re in for a treat. If you have, you’ll know that you can’t wait to grab a copy and escape to the past!
