justjukka: Both Novik and McCaffrey take great care in developing the worlds for their respective series. If you like one, you may very well like the other.
Caramellunacy: Both are alternate history/fantasy novels with a distinct nautical flair. His Majesty's Dragon is set during the Napoleonic Wars - just with dragons (obviously) as a sort of Air Navy - complete with crew. Leviathan is set during an alternate WWI between the Darwinists (who have living ships & weapons) and the Clankers (who use machines).… (més)
2wonderY: This is a real life story of a man whose all encompassing relationship with elephants, one in particular, echo that between Laurence and Temeraire.
Loved it! I wish that I had a dragon of my own - especially if he was as cool as Temeraire.
This book sounds ridiculous - 19th century naval officer finds a dragon egg and it hatches, speaks fluent English, and bonds to him. Then they have lots of exciting adventures fighting a war! Bit for some reason it's a page turner. I just wanted to keep on reading and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
I also expected to be reading a book with tactical battles described ad nauseum but instead found it to be sweet and charming and maybe even a bit like a romance. ( )
Naomi Novik is now one of my all time favorite authors (alongside of the likes of Tolkien, Susanna Clarke, George MacDonald, Madeline L'Engle). She combines the style of the nautical historical novel (made famous by English author Patrick O'Brian) with the fantasy styles of Susanna Clarke and Anne McCaffrey into something highly enjoyable. The story is set during an alternate-history version of the Napoleonic Wars, in which dragons not only exist but are used as a staple of aerial warfare in Asia and Europe. The dragons of the story are portrayed as sapient and intelligent, capable of logical thought and human speech (which is amazing!). The series centers primarily on events involving Temeraire and his handler, Will Laurence. The first book of the series tells how Laurence, formerly a Captain in the Royal Navy, becomes Temeraire's handler, and of their early training in preparation for battles against Napoleon's aerial fleet. As Laurence and Temeraire bond, you too will grow with affection for this wonderful work of alternative-history/fantasy. ( )
What a refreshing take on history and on "dragon tales"! I loved this story and can't wait to read more of the series. Temeraire has stolen my heart. ( )
The Napoleonic wars except dragons are real. That was enough to sell me on the book, but I wasn't prepared for such an absolutely sweet story of the friendship and love between a man and his dragon. I can't wait to read the rest of them. ( )
I’ve seen this book reviewed as “Master and Commander with dragons” and that was definitely the vibe of His Majesty’s Dragon. I really enjoyed this novel. The action scenes didn’t do a lot for me, but the characters and their interactions were wonderful. Looking forward to the second. ( )

The deck of the French ship was slippery with blood, heaving in the choppy sea; a stroke might as easily bring down the man making it as the intended target.

In his heart he shared the simplicity of Temeraire's view of the matter, and he fell asleep almost at once in the security of the slow, deep rushing of Temeraire's heartbeat, so very much like the endless sound of the sea.
