The book starts with Lila as an abandoned baby on a church doorstep. She is taken in by a woman named Doll who lives a gypsy lifestyle with a group of fellow wanderers. Doll kills a man with a knife and she and Lila lose contact. The only thing remaining of Doll is the killing knife which she keeps strapped to her leg. Most of the book involves Lila's marriage and relationship with an elderly preacher. Lila is a very interesting character who always seems content no matter the situation. A worthy National Book Award finalist. ( )
