I'm curious who that woman was who caused Watanuki to get sick. It seems like their relationship would have a positive effect since the woman lost her son and Watanuki lost his parents, but clearly she was some sort of supernatural creature. Possibly related to the rival magician who was hinted at in the pervious volume? ( )

Crossposted at by express permission of this reviewer   Synopsis: Watanuki has several adventures, most with Domeki saving his butt, some by himself and all with Yuko making fun of him the entire time.   My Thoughts: The whole tone of xxxHolic is so different from Tsubasa that it is hard to compare them. xxxHolic is darker while at the same time being funnier. Watanuki and Domeki have the perfect comedy vibe between. So much so that even when they are both in terrible danger they are constantly bickering and making the audience laugh.   Watanuki does seem to have an unhealthy fascination for Himiwara, even though it is obvious she doesn't like him. Tie that in with the fact that the Rain spirit is nuts about him and you have to wonder what is going wrong inside his head.   The overall plot. Having read Tsubasa to the end I am now aware of what is going on, so little things are jumping out. But they are so little that if you didn't know the end of the story they wouldn't mean anything.   Rating: 4 of 5 Stars Artist & Author: CLAMP " ( )

This volume is really good but really sad. The first story is about the spirit world and Domeki gets to see what Watanuki sees. It is really fun. They are on an unknowing mission from Yuko but get to see some beautiful things. Also some development between Yuko and Domeki. He guesses that she does not want him to come into her shop and what that could mean. In the second story Watanuki makes friends with something, we never discover what she was, and it is really sad. Domeki has to make a choice and that hurts Watanuki but saves his life. It was really sad, seeing Watanuki meet someone who understands how lonely he really is. She does not want to kill him but she cannot help it. It was touching to watch them interact and to see Watanuki stop fighting with Domeki.

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. ( )

This one had my favorite mini-story yet of this series. Heads up for spoilers here!

The first story involved Watanuki's introduction a cat-like spirit who gives him an inkling of his growing popularity in the spirit world. Along with Domeki they get to witness a special parade and, much to Yuko's delight, bring home some special Sake.

In the next story arch (my favorite mentioned above) while Yuko is away making Gods, presumably of Ashura and Yasha in the Tsubasa universe, Watanuki meets a woman who has lost her son. Being an orphan himself Watanuki strikes up a friendship. However, it soon becomes clear that the relationship between them is hazardous to Watanuki's health. Despite that, he continues to see the woman he now knows is a spirit. In an effort to save Watanuki Domeki shoots the spirit, knowing Watanuki may never forgive him.

I'm not really sure why I liked that particular story so much. Maybe because we get to see Watanuki acting more sympathetic and serious than usual in his attempts to ease the spirit's loneliness knowing it is causing him harm or Domeki's determination to protect Watanuki in spite of himself. Very interesting either way.

I think that xxxHolic is actually a pretty philosophical manga. It is odd that this story counterpoints the primarily straightforward adventure tale of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle but they work well together anyway. I can easily see why both series are so popular. ( )
