This novel features two timelines (1790s and present) and the perspective of three different women. I listened to this book as an audiobook, which often means I zone out a bit, but not for this tale. My favorite pieces were the sections told from the perspective of Caroline in present-day London - as a former history major there was almost too much about her story that I could relate to. The tale of the old apothecary and how late 18th-century women took matters into their own hands (i.e. poison) was full of feminist undertones and I can always appreciate that. And finally, it doesn't hurt that this book includes a librarian who helps uncover the mystery with her research skills (more stories like this please!). Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to historical fiction fans. ( )

Judging by reader reviews, The Lost Apothecary is a book readers either enjoy or dislike. There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I admit, it’s a difficult story to enter, but it’s worth the effort. In 1791 London, Nella Clavinger mixes potions and tisanes that can be used to eliminate oppressive or abusive men. Successful applicants have their names inscribed in a book, perhaps the only record the woman ever existed. Nella has one strict rule. The poison is not to be used against another woman. And the primary plot moves forward from there.
In contemporary London, Caroline Parcewell has the usual complaints found it women’s fiction. Her husband is unfaithful. Her life is unfulfilling. She isn’t remotely interesting, until she uncovers a blue vial hidden in Thames River mud and uncovers Nella’s story. Read the book, and you can do the same. ( )

This was one of my highly anticipated releases of 2021 based on the synopsis about a secret apothecary shop in the 18th century that only caters to women wronged by cheating men with well-disguised poisons. NGL, I totally would be that an apothecary serial killer in the 1700s. I had expected this to be an epic feminist book - a secret network of wronged women taking down patrichachy, but it's not. Once I got over my disappointment of that and enjoyed the story for what it was, this really is a spectacular debut by Sarah Penner - a story about the lies people tell themselves and one another that hurt and connect lives even 200 years apart.

The book flip flops between two timelines (present and 18th century). Caroline in the present timeline comes to London after discovering her husband's affair and she finds an apothecary vial while mudlarking that rekindled her life for history and she discovers the story of the lost apothecary 200 years ago. The pacing is exquisite; the way the two stories went in parallel, then intersected, then connected was so satisfying. While it wasn't the feminist story I wanted it to be, it did have a feminist ending which I loved. Also the bonus poison recipes at the end were *chef's kiss*

"History doesn't record the intricacies of women's relationships with one another; they're not to be uncovered." ( )

Problem is I found the narrator quite annoying.
