He believed in this in an epoch were people were just beginning to realize that there was nothing sacred or natural about their lives and the lives of those that surrounded them, and that society was not a fixed state of things: it could be transformed. Wilberforce used that new power to fight against the most odious human institution: slavery. For this fight he helped to create concepts that are familiar to any NGO or pressure group today, but were unknown back then. You can't explain Greenpeace or the "Madres de Plaza de Mayo" without Wilberforce. The name William Wilberforce should be in the thoughts of every school boy. This excellent book should be required reading (the movie is also great). Wilberforce worked tirelessly for decades before he saw the fruits of his efforts. He was an exceptional man who deserves to be more widely known. The (often horrifying) social and political landscape of the times features prominently in the narrative as well. The purple prose made the read a bit tedious at times, and the author’s voice was too prominent for me to give it 4 stars, but it’s still a worthy read.
