I liked the book, it's fair to say I really liked the book. You got to learn more about the major the characters and different parts of the known world. And depending on what country you are reading about you are reading about, there is either battle or conspiracy.
One side needs to spy on the other side and that proves to be very interesting. ( )

I'm disappointed but not surprised.

This book was much, much too long. It had no business being nearly 600 pages long. I initially assumed Leigh Bardugo produced this massive tome because it was intended to be the last book in the Grishaverse, but evidently, it's not going to be. It's just self-indulgently lengthy.

Everything I disliked about the first book was amplified here. There were so many POVs and storylines going on that I struggled to get invested in any of them. When the book finally meanders to its resolution, it's in a deus ex machina way that makes the two novels I plodded through seem pointless. Not very satisfying and definitely not worth the 1100 pages it took to get there. It was like a train crashing through molasses.

Bardugo's written some excellent books, and I really think she has it in her to be a fantastic author. However, in her attempts to weave the Grishaverse together, she turned it into a tangled disaster. It's time to leave it behind. ( )

Rule of Wolves - Bardugo
4 stars

This book stalled in the middle for me. I came close to leaving it unfinished. It is the final book of a ‘duology’ set in Bardugo’s Grishaverse. It actually includes characters from all of the previous books, so I’m not sure how the promotional ‘duology’ applies. The book continues the fraught history of the constantly threatened kingdom of Ravka. King Nikolai Lanstov faces threats from every border, from religious factions within his country, and from the demon within his own body. Somewhere in the middle of the book, I suffered threat fatigue. I just couldn’t take anymore.

I did have an attachment to some of the characters from previous books. Curiosity finally brought me back to the trials and tribulations of Ravkan politics. King Nikolai has his trusty supporters, especially his Grisha general, Zoya Nazyalensky. Nina Zenik continues her undercover spying deep in Fjerdan territory. There’s even a quick trip to Kerch to pull off a quick heist with Kaz Brekker and members of his crew. There was far too much paranormal deus ex machina used to bring about the apparently happy ending to the possibly not-a-duology. There’s plenty of wiggle room for another book. Or two. ( )

This book relies heavily on the charms of Nikolai as a character, yet despite it being "his duology," there is a lot of noise from the peanut gallery that isn't nearly as engaging.

Cameos from our favorite dregs were the highlight of the entire story, and some ships sailed happily off into the sunset, which will delight a number of fans. Call me messy & masochistic, but the ending left everything a bit too tidy for my liking. ( )

OH MY GOD I FINALLY GOT A COPY FOR THIS. CANNOT WAIT TO START.

Blog Review: https://trishadoeseverythingbutstudy2.wordpress.com/2021/02/28/february-2021-rev...

Update 18/03/20: So I actually wasn't going to review this because it's a sampler and not complete, and unedited, but I was writing one for Netgalley, so I thought why not write a vague review? And here it is:

Thanks to the publisher, Leigh Bardugo, and Netgalley, for providing me with a free e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Amazing sampler, that I really enjoyed! The story is gearing up for an intense conclusion, and I'm just hoping no one is going to die!

The story continues with Nina and Hanne, who are immersing themselves into even more danger by hiding their true intentions from Hanne's father, and I'm hoping these two get together by the end of this book. A new character is introduced from the nation of Shu Han, which is refreshing because of the serious lack of characters we've had from this place. And Nikolai and Zoya are confusing as ever, especially since Zoya seems to be really changed by her experience from the last book, and Nikolai is still batting his demons (see what I did there?)

I personally can't wait to read the rest of this book, and I fully recommend it to everyone waiting for this after loving King Of Scars!

Update 21/02/21: I HAVE A SAMPLER FROM NETGALLEY
MY LIFE HAS MEANING
UNFORTUNATELY IT'S ONLY A SAMPLER, SO WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL BE LEFT OF MY HEART BY THE END
