I Would Leave Me If I Could is a collection of poetry written by artist Halsey (Ashley Frangipane).

I pretty much love anything and everything Halsey related, I have since her first EP. I had no doubt that I would love her poetry. I was right.

Halsey has always been pretty open with her fans about what she feels and this poetry is yet another look into her soul. I loved it. ( )

I want to say first that Halsey is maybe my favorite musician (I flip flop between her and Taylor Swift). That being said, this wasn't my fave. A lot of it seemed like diary entries reformatted like poetry, or half-written drafts of songs. The language is simple-- and I'm not a poet, I don't like overly complex verse (my favorite poet is Mary Oliver who's as straightforward as they come) but this was still verrrry simple. I'm glad she was able to be so vulnerable in this and I do think the best parts of this book were poems like "The Painter" which were of course about very difficult and heartbreaking subjects. This gave context on her life and the stories she tells in her songs, which I appreciate, but I feel like I would be more interested in reading a memoir format than a book of poetry.

I think that this collection has value for anyone who's followed Halsey for a while, because it does sort of provide insight to her creative process, as a lot of the poems were later developed to songs on Manic. If you're not familiar with her music though, I don't think it's the best poetry ever written and I'm not sure if this would be published without her celebrity status. ( )
