At turns fascinating, weird, and completely unbelievable, Greenlights is a must-read as far as celebrity memoirs, and maybe even memoirs in general. You forget that actors are real people. You forget that they have been children with parents, that they have had failures and triumphs just like you and I. This novel reminds us that we are all the same in most ways. All striving to better ourselves, find ourselves, be ourselves, love ourselves. I feel like I've just been given a pep talk which has reignited the fire that burns within me. I feel grounded once more, ready to march forward and reach higher. "Be brave, take the hill" McConaughey says. That line really hit me this morning and drilled a hole into my soul which had my eyes filling with tears. Turns out that has been the motto of my existence my whole life and I didn't realize until now. I'm not sure if I'm always being brave or just pretending but I am for damn sure always taking the hill and when shit gets in my path I always find a way to keep climbing. McConaughey also says that life is a series of green lights and red lights. What may seem like a red light right now in this moment may turn into a green light someday as you look in that rearview mirror - so true. I know the reason he wrote this book was to release a part of himself into the world so that it may inspire others and by God he accomplished his goal - at least with me. Read the book everyone. There's something in it for you all. Better yet, listen to the book so you hear his expression as he spins his tale. I laughed and I cried, and I sat and thought about life. 5 stars to the best book I have read so far this year. This was a book club book and probably not something I would have picked up on my own, not being a specific McConaughey fan. I enjoyed his stories, and enjoyed the narration--he is a talented storyteller. My favorite was him describing how he planned on preparing for the role as a dragon slayer in Reign of Fire. However, I do not find "outlaw logic" charming or admirable, and for me the self-help/preaching was a bit much. Excellent!
A gloriously bonkers effort from the Oscar-winning star of Dallas Buyers Club: it is not a memoir, he assures readers, but an "approach book". In between anecdotes about warring parents, travelling, fame, films and debauchery, Greenlights bulges with lists, photos, poems and notes scrawled with fortune-cookie homilies, all part of his basic philosophy that he likes to call "livin' – there’s no 'g' on the end of livin because life is a verb."
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Over one million copies sold! From the Academy Award®-winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction "Unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid, Matthew McConaughey's book invites us to grapple with the lessons of his life as he did--and to see that the point was never to win, but to understand."--Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck I've been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life's challenges--how to get relative with the inevitable--you can enjoy a state of success I call "catching greenlights." So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops. Hopefully, it's medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot's license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears. It's a love letter. To life. It's also a guide to catching more greenlights--and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too. Good luck.
